Strategy & Capability | ABF Workforce | Tactical Support To Operations | Armouries & Tactical Capability

The Armouries and Tactical Capability currently have two vacancies at the EL1 level. These are National Armoury Registrar, and Small-Arms Fleet Manager.

The section plays a critical role in ensuring the operational readiness, safety, and compliance of the Australian Border Force (ABF). It is responsible for the national governance, management, and assurance of all ABF service firearms, ammunition, personal defensive equipment (PDE), and associated armoury infrastructure and training.

Our ideal candidate

  • Proven leadership in technical and governance domains, with the ability to lead a technical team while also guiding your team through clear direction, coaching, and accountability
  • Strong understanding of high-risk asset management across the lifecycle
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold governance and compliance, ensuring accuracy, auditability, and integrity of records and processes while embedding best practice standards
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with experience liaising across internal business units, senior executives, and external agencies such as Defence, law enforcement, and regulators
  • Strategic and analytical mindset, able to balance day-to-day operational sustainment with long-term capability planning, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Duties and responsibilities

Small-Arms Fleet Manager

  • Operational Leadership - Lead and manage armourer teams across all regions to ensure consistent processes for the servicing, maintenance, procurement and storage of small arms, tactical equipment, and Personal Defensive Equipment
  • Workforce Capability - Oversee training, technical upskilling, and professional development of armourers to maintain organisational operational readiness and technical standards
  • Maintenance and Sustainment - Ensure the timely servicing, inspection, and rectification of small arms and defensive equipment
  • Policy Implementation - Embed and enforce approved governance frameworks, and compliance standards
  • Operational Support - Provide technical advice regarding equipment readiness, maintenance cycles, fleet issues and suitability
  • National Armoury Registrar

  • Leadership of National Registrar Function - Lead a small national team and provide direction, mentoring, and guidance to regional registrars across the ABF network
  • Governance & Standards Management - Develop, maintain, and enforce national policies, and standards for firearms and PDE accountability
  • Stakeholder Engagement - Liaise with internal stakeholders (Armourers, Marine Unit, Operational Safety Training Unit, Integrity, Risk and Assurance, Operational Teams) and external agencies (Defence, law enforcement) to align register practices with broader compliance requirements
  • Assurance & Compliance - Provide oversight and assurance on the integrity, accuracy, and audit readiness of registry data, identifying and mitigating risks to accountability and governance
  • Continuous Improvement & Reporting - Lead initiatives to improve systems, data quality, and governance frameworks, and provide high-level reporting and advice to senior executives on capability risks and compliance.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

    The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and :

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
  • In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
