About our team

National Operations | Targeting & Intelligence Operations | Targeting | National Profiling Section

The National Profiling Section delivers the ABF's enterprise, rules-based Targeting Activity (Profile) Management capability, which enables the ABF's targeting operations conducted through the National Border Targeting Centre (NBTC), for the traveller, mail and cargo domains. In the cargo domain, alerts and profiles also facilitate trade, strengthen supply chain security, and detect illegal trade. These targeting activities are based on customs compliance and enforcement measures that administer the collection of border revenue, regulated goods and supply chain risks.

The section divided into three (3) teams with specific responsibilities in the Traveller, Cargo and Mail domains, works collaboratively with stakeholders to develop and deploy profiles in the ABF's Enterprise Targeting capability>

The Cargo team is comprised of an Assistant Director as the Domain Lead, supported by a Supervisor, Senior Cargo Profilers and Cargo Profilers.

Our ideal candidate

Applications are invited from people who have experience in or an understanding of the movement of cargo and how this relates to border control functions. With a focus on innovation and progression, our ideal candidate will be technically inclined, have excellent written and oral communication skills and experience managing a small team of technical professionals. The successful candidate will be self-driven and seek to directly influence the key outcomes of the organisation.

Duties and responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of technical staff including undertaking all required HR and administrative tasks.
• Develop, test, and deploy cargo profiles in the Cargo Risk Assessment (CRA) module of the Integrated Cargo System (ICS) and the Border Risk Engine (BRE) within the Threat Management System (TMS) to identify and refer cargo border risks and threats.
• Provide training and support to cargo profilers within the team on rule-authoring in CRA and BRE profiling platforms.
• Provide high quality cargo profiling advice, technical subject matter expertise and support to stakeholders to develop and implement cargo profiles.
• Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders in relation to the effective use of profiles to inform decision making and support operational outcomes.
• Provide and conduct quality assurance and reviews on profiles prior to and post deployment to ensure business and technical accuracy.
• Contribute to the business-as-usual functions and processes of the National Profiling
• Contribute subject matter expert advice and support the development and implementation of new capabilities, programs and projects within the Department / ABF as necessary.
