Key Responsibilities
1. Surgical Management
- Perform surgical procedures such as :
- GI cancer surgeries (esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas, liver)
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, appendectomy
- Colorectal, bariatric, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic surgeries
- Emergency procedures for GI bleeding, perforation, or obstruction
- Handle complex elective and emergency GI cases independently.
2. Pre- and Post-Operative Care
Conduct pre-operative evaluations, risk assessments, and obtain consents.Manage post-operative care including monitoring for complications (e.g. leaks, infections).Collaborate with intensivists and physicians for co-morbid condition management.3. Multidisciplinary Coordination
Work closely with departments like gastroenterology, oncology, hepatology, pathology, radiology , and critical care.Participate in tumor boards and surgical planning meetings .Coordinate with dieticians and physiotherapists for holistic patient recovery.4. Patient Education & Counseling
Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, surgical risks, and recovery expectations.Provide emotional support and clear communication throughout the surgical journey.5. Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate surgical notes, discharge summaries, and operative records.Ensure adherence to hospital protocols, infection control measures, and NABH / NABL / JCI standards .Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.6. Academic & Training Duties (For Teaching Hospitals)
Mentor medical students, interns, and residents in GI surgery techniques.Participate in academic sessions, workshops, CME programs, and research.Publish clinical studies and contribute to surgical innovation.Qualifications
Essential :
MBBS + MS / DNB in General SurgeryMCh / DNB in Surgical Gastroenterology ORFellowship in GI / Laparoscopic / HPB Surgery (recognized by IAGES / ASI / SGEI or international boards)Desirable :
Experience in laparoscopic and minimally invasive GI proceduresTraining in GI oncology or liver / pancreatic surgeryBLS / ACLS certification for surgical emergency readinessSkills & Competencies
Advanced surgical skills in GI and abdominal surgeryStrong diagnostic and decision-making abilityExpertise in laparoscopic and open techniquesClear and empathetic communicationMultidisciplinary teamwork and leadershipAdherence to surgical ethics and patient safety standardsSkills Required
