User experience researcher

Mathematica is looking for an in-country User Experience Researcher with a demonstrated track record of leading user experience research using quantitative and qualitative methods in India. The candidate must have proven experience designing and conducting UX research for digital products or services aimed at social impact or with a strong focus on adoption and usability in rural markets.

Key responsibilities

Lead user research on farmers’ experiences with Virtual Agronomist and Farmer. Chat, with focus on women, youth, and marginalized groups, in Bihar, India, and Kenya.

Conduct FGDs, KIIs, household interviews, and use participatory tools (farmer diaries, journey mapping) to capture farmer voice in low-literacy contexts.

Collaborate with implementers and evaluators to design A / B tests to assess methods that boost farmer uptake and retention.

Integrate digital analytics (chat logs, click-throughs, sentiment analysis) with qualitative findings to explain user behaviors.

Apply a strong gender and inclusion lens, identifying barriers such as access to devices, time-use, and literacy.

Build local capacity by training enumerators and interviewers in human-centered design and user research methods.

Requirements

Advanced degree in human-centered design, anthropology, sociology, development studies, engineering or related fields.

Minimum 5–7 years of applied user research in rural settings. Although not required, relevant work experience in Bihar, India is a bonus.

Demonstrated experience in agriculture, digital inclusion, or ICT4 D research, especially with smallholder farmers.

Experience leading or supporting with quantitative UX research methods such as A / B tests or surveys.

Proven ability to conduct qualitative research in rural settings using methods like participatory research, focus groups, and workshops.

Fluency and ability to conduct research in Hindi.

Ability to work independently in rural contexts, with strong communication and facilitation skills.
