Background
Fair Trade is an alternative approach to conventional trade based on a partnership between producers, businesses, civil society and consumers. Fairtrade offers farmers and agricultural workers a better deal and improved terms of trade. It allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and invest in their future, the environment and their communities. Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty and ensure environmental sustainability through their everyday food and fashion buying decisions.
Fairtrade International is an international network of not-for-profit organisations dedicated to empowering marginal farmers and workers in the food and fashion value chains, to promoting sustainable livelihoods for these communities and greater environmental sustainability. Fairtrade India project of the Centre for Social Markets started building the Fairtrade Movement in India, with the support of consumers, producer organisations, businesses and government agencies. The Fairtrade India project is helping build sustainability principles based markets for Fairtrade certified products in India, supporting over 5,000 Fairtrade certified producers across the country.
Working closely with a small core team, the Business Development Manager Coffee & Spices will help to increase the number and availability of Fairtrade labelled products in the Food & Beverage sector of the Indian market with a specific focus on Coffee & Spices. You’ll be a good communicator and self-starter, and will already have experience in selling / business development in the business to business space.
Key Responsibilities
Develop Prospect Pipeline & convert into Fairtrade market opportunities for producers
Based in Bangalore, the primary role of the Business Development Manager Coffee & Spices is to identify and develop relationships with prospect buyers and facilitate their sourcing linkages with Fairtrade committed farming communities specifically for the Coffee & Spices categories. Detailed set of activities are mentioned below
- Evaluate the available grades and quality of coffee and spices with the farmer organisations and accordingly identify market opportunities.
- Prospect for potential new clients and turn this into increased market linkages opportunities Fairtrade coffee and spice producers.
- Identify potential clients, and the decision makers within the client organization in the coffee & spice industry.
- Research and build relationships with new clients.
- Work with team to develop proposals that speaks to the client’s requirements, and objectives
- Manage the solution development for the offering from building business case for adoption of Fairtrade to facilitating Fairtrade coffee and spice sourcing linkages for the clients
- Handle objections by clarifying, emphasizing agreements and working through differences to a positive conclusion.
- Support existing clients through reporting, helping with sustainable sourcing requirements and by supporting on marketing and brand building activities.
Help growth of Fairtrade Coffee & Spices based product range and penetration in India
Identify opportunities for services and distribution channels that will lead to an increase in Fairtrade labelled sales and market linkages for producer organisations specifically for Coffee & Spices.Help develop network of distributors and retailers for the premium products such as organic products.Establish and strengthen relationships with traders, roasters, brands, and other stakeholders.Support market linkages for Fairtrade Committed Coffee & Spice Producer Organizations
Identify supply chains, processors, manufacturers, roasters and other businesses as per the market requirementsFacilitate linkages for post-harvest processing of coffee & spices to ensure suitable quality match with the market parameter.Undertake costing and commercial assessment for Fairtrade certified supply chainsUndertake technical assessment of the potential supply chain including proposing solutions to fill the supply chain gapsWorking with team to understand the certification and sustainability requirementsCo-ordinate implementation of Fairtrade and sustainability programmes in the supply chainSupport Monitoring & Evaluation of the supply chain sustainability parametersCollate and support sustainability reporting for specific supply chainsSupport international market linkages for Fairtrade Committed Producer Organisations for Coffee & Spices
Based on the quality and volume of coffee and spices grown by Fairtrade Certified farmer organisations connect with exporters in India as well as direct international buyers to facilitate access to international markets.Support with servicing with samples and other technical queries from buyersPerson Specification (Essential)
5-7 years Business to business Sales / Business Development experience in Business to Business sales for Coffee, Spices and other plantation crops.Deep understanding of food value chains specifically the Coffee value chain from sourcing to sales.Knowledge of agri-based supply chains and logisticsGraduate ideally in Agriculture, Business, Food Sciences or related fieldSolutions oriented and capable of working in small teams.Experience of lead development and sales pipeline managementUnderstanding of Commercial frameworks for agri-value chains and the cost structures for Coffee sourcingExceptional negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills in English (verbal and written)Proven ability to build / foster business relationships with a network in the Coffee and spices sectorExperience of account management dealing with stakeholders from different departmentsSelf-driven, ability to take initiativeTeam player and flexible to undertake any task to achieve team objectivePerson Specification (Desirable)
