Job Description : Assistant Professor – Petroleum Engineering
1. Position Overview
The Department of Petroleum Engineering invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The successful candidate will be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and service. We seek a motivated academic with a strong commitment to excellence in education, scholarship, and student mentorship.
2. Key Responsibilities
Teaching
- Teach core and elective courses in Petroleum Engineering (undergraduate and / or postgraduate).
- Develop new courses aligned with current and emerging topics in petroleum engineering (e.G., reservoir simulation, drilling engineering, production engineering, enhanced oil recovery).
- Prepare course materials — lectures, lab exercises, assignments, and assessments.
- Supervise students’ final-year projects, dissertations, and theses.
- Hold office hours (in person and / or online) to support students.
- Participate in curriculum design, program review, and accreditation processes.
Research
Establish and maintain an independent research program in petroleum engineering or a related area.Write grant proposals to secure external funding.Publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.Collaborate with industry, national / international research institutions, and other academic units.Mentor graduate students (M.Tech / MS / PhD) and postdoctoral researchers (if applicable).Translate research into practical / applied outcomes, e.G., consultancy, technology transfer, patents (if aligned with university policy).Service
Serve on departmental, faculty, and university committees (academic, administrative, quality assurance, etc.).Contribute to student recruitment activities, outreach, and community engagement.Participate in professional societies, conferences, and other scholarly service.Assist in organizing seminars, workshops, and symposia in the petroleum engineering domain.Professional Development
Stay current with developments in petroleum engineering through continuous learning.Engage with industry partners to bridge teaching and research with practical applications.Contribute to accreditation processes (ABET or regional equivalent) through course assessments, documentation, and improvement.3. Qualifications & Skills
Essential :
Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline (e.G., Reservoir Engineering, Drilling, Production, Petroleum Geoscience).Strong record (or potential) for high-quality research (publications, conference presentations).Demonstrated (or potential) capability for teaching undergraduate and / or graduate courses.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Ability to work collaboratively in a team and contribute positively to departmental culture.Desirable :
Postdoctoral or industrial experience in petroleum engineering.Experience in securing research funding.Experience in supervising M.Sc. / Ph.D. students.Experience with learning management systems (LMS) and student information systems.Practical experience (industry exposure) in petroleum sector.Experience in accreditation processes (e.G., ABET).Good networking with petroleum industry and research labs.
