Staff Engineer (Gateway Services)

Job descriptionDesign, build, and optimize gateway services that enable secure, standards-based interoperability between disparate EMR / EHR systems, clinical applications, and external partners. Implement and advocate for healthcare data exchange standards such as HL7, FHIR, CCD, and IHE frameworks to ensure robust and scalable information flow across systems. Architect solutions that meet CMS interoperability mandates and other regulatory requirements, ensuring data privacy, auditability, and traceability. Develop and maintain high-throughput, low-latency data streaming and processing pipelines to support real-time and batch analytics for clinical and operational use cases. Ensure end-to-end security of data in motion and at rest, implementing strong authentication, authorization, and encryption protocols. Drive reliability, scalability, and observability across gateway and data processing services, including monitoring, alerting, and automated recovery. Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentor engineers, conduct design / code reviews, and set engineering best practices. Partner with product, compliance, and clinical informatics teams to translate business and regulatory requirements into technical solutions.
What You Need
- 8+ years of experience in backend, infrastructure, or data engineering, with a focus on distributed systems, cloud platforms, and healthcare interoperability.
- Proven expertise in designing and operating gateway or API infrastructure for high-scale, regulated environments.
- Good hands-on experience with interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, CCD), EMR / EHR integration, and healthcare data exchange protocols.
- Good understanding of security standards (TLS, OAuth, SAML), role-based access, and compliance frameworks (CMS, HIPAA).
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure), containerization (Kubernetes, Docker), and data streaming technologies (Kafka, gRPC, service mesh).
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and mentor engineering teams.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or Go.
- bachelors or masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
