About our team

Immigration Group is responsible for administering Australia’s Permanent and Temporary Migration Programs, people smuggling policy and implementation, and the Refugee and Humanitarian Program and Settlement Programs.

The Group delivers status resolution in detention and the community, and manages the Department’s client facing services and information services. It also provides policy advice on national impacts of migration, citizenship, people mobility, and delivers citizenship, social cohesion and multicultural programs.

Our ideal candidate

You must already be an EL1 in the Australian Public Service employed in an ongoing role to apply for this position.

Duties and responsibilities

You must already be an EL1 in the Australian Public Service employed in an ongoing role to apply for this position. You will transfer at the EL1 from your current Department to the Department of Home Affairs, Immigration Group.

You will typically work in one of the following roles :

Service Delivery

Service Delivery roles operate under broad direction in support of Australia’s migration, humanitarian and citizenship programs. They are responsible for program implementation, aligned with departmental and government strategic priorities.

Service Delivery roles are responsible for managing teams and developing capability, and will often act as an escalation point for complex or sensitive cases.

Program Management

Program Managers manage and support the implementation, development, continuous improvement and coordination of one or more programs in line with departmental objectives, to support the delivery of a service. Officers assist with the interpretation of business outcomes and project goals, ensuring agreement or common understanding with stakeholders as appropriate.

Supporting the leadership of the day-to-day operations of the team to achieve assigned outcomes and priorities is a key function of a program manager. They may also assist with cost benefit analysis, budgeting, risk, planning and resource management. Program Managers establish, manage and grow productive working relationships through day-today engagement with the program network, including responding to internal and external complex enquiries and requests and providing advice to colleagues and other staff to assist with business improvement.

Administration Officer

Administration Officers provide complex administrative support to their teams. They work in accordance with control and accountability frameworks underpinned by policies, instructions and delegations for corporate and internal services. Officers in this job role may perform a range of finance, human resource, information technology and corporate activities.

Administrative Officers establish and maintain effective working relationships and networks, providing specialist advice and support. They understand business objectives and strategic direction and are committed to providing exceptional client services.

Policy Officer

Policy Officers develop and implement evidence-based policies that support delivery of the Government’s agenda across all areas of Immigration policy. Policy Officers are responsible for identifying, developing and implementing policy solutions based on research and evidence by undertaking complex research and analysis, identifying trends, and interpreting and amending legislation.

Often the policy design process is completed within tight timeframes, this dynamic environment requires policy officers to be agile and responsive.

Compliance and Regulation

Compliance Officers contribute to migration program integrity through proactive identification, management and resolution of clients’ immigration status whilst reducing the risk of physical, economic and social harm to the Australian community. Compliance Officers leverage all opportunities for clear, consistent messaging to progress status resolution outcomes.

They use a range of tools and services to ensure cases progress to a status resolution outcome in a lawful, timely and appropriate manner.

Additional information

You are only eligible to apply for a permanent Section 26 transfer if you are a current ongoing EL1 employee with a Commonwealth government agency (not including Department of Home Affairs).

If you are not a current ongoing EL1 employee with a Commonwealth government agency, you will be automatically disqualified.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

You must already be an EL1 in the Australian Public Service employed in an ongoing role to apply for this position.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and :

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
  • In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
