This role will be responsible for financial planning, donor and grant management, compliance, budgeting, reporting, and ensuring strong internal controls. The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of financial management within a non-profit context and demonstrate a commitment to transparency, compliance, and long-term financial sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Management & Planning
- Lead the development and execution of the financial strategy aligned with the organization's mission and program priorities.
- Oversee preparation and management of the organizational and donor-specific budgets.
- Conduct forecasting, cost analysis, and resource planning for long-term financial sustainability.
- Ensure efficient utilization and allocation of resources based on programmatic and strategic objectives.
- Develop and maintain financial management policies in line with best practices and NGO governance standards.
2. Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Ensure timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the senior leadership, board, and donors.
- Maintain full compliance with Indian accounting standards, FCRA, Income Tax, CSR, and other statutory regulations.
- Provide comprehensive financial statements including P&L, balance sheet, budget variance reports, and cash flow forecasts.
- Lead audit processes (statutory, donor, internal) and facilitate closure of findings.
- Ensure timely tax filings and submission of required financial documents to authorities.
3. Donor & Grant Management
- Supervise donor fund utilization in compliance with grant agreements.
- Track restricted and unrestricted funds and manage donor-specific reporting and audits.
- Coordinate with program teams to align financial planning with project objectives.
- Provide financial inputs for proposals and fundraising efforts, including cost projections and budgeting.
4. Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Strengthen internal financial controls, approval workflows, and documentation processes.
- Monitor financial risks and develop mitigation strategies, including adequate cash reserves and liquidity planning.
- Implement and maintain audit trails for all transactions.
- Ensure ethical practices and anti-fraud safeguards across financial operations.
5. Team Leadership & Capacity Building
- Lead, mentor, and build the capacity of the finance team, ensuring clarity in roles and strong coordination.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance management for finance staff.
- Build financial awareness among program teams through training on budgeting, compliance, and fund utilization.
6. Strategic & Operational Support
- Collaborate with the leadership team on strategic planning and investment decisions.
- Monitor program-level financial performance and provide insights to improve costeffectiveness.
- Contribute to policy development, annual plans, and financial dashboards for realtime decision-making.
7. Financial Systems & Process Improvement
- Lead the implementation and optimization of financial systems (e.g., Tally, Keka, Zoho Books, or other ERP solutions).
- Ensure integration of budgeting, accounting, and reporting systems for consistency and accuracy.
- Drive automation and digitization of financial workflows to increase transparency and efficiency.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Timely submission of financial reports (Board / Donor / Statutory)
- Budget vs. Actual utilization variance within 10%
- 100% compliance with FCRA, Income Tax, CSR regulations, etc.
- Audit observations resolved within 30 days of receipt
- Donor financial report accuracy : ≥98%
- Program and finance alignment meetings held quarterly
- Reduction in manual processes through system improvements (target : 50%
automation)
Qualifications
- Education : CA / ICWA / MBA (Finance) / M.Com with strong nonprofit accounting background
- Experience : Minimum 10 years in financial management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role at a non-profit, CSR-funded initiative, or donor agency
Skills & Competencies
- Strategic thinking with financial acumen
- Strong knowledge of Indian regulatory frameworks for NGOs
- Advanced Excel, Tally ERP, Keka, and / or donor budgeting tools
