MongoDB sharding distributes large datasets and workloads across multiple machines (shards) to horizontally scale a database, improving storage capacity, performance, and availability. A shard key determines how data is partitioned and distributed to the shards, while query routers (mongos instances) direct client requests to the appropriate shards, creating a single logical database view.
