Job Summary :
The Head of Pharmacy will be responsible for overseeing and managing the entire pharmacy department within the hospital, ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient use of medications. This role involves supervising pharmacy staff, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, managing inventory, and implementing policies that optimize pharmaceutical care in collaboration with the medical and nursing teams.
Key Responsibilities :
- Leadership & Management :
- Lead, mentor, and manage the pharmacy team, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff.
- Oversee daily operations of the hospital pharmacy, ensuring smooth functioning and service delivery.
- Develop and implement departmental goals, policies, and procedures to ensure optimal medication use and patient care.
- Pharmaceutical Services :
- Ensure the safe, accurate, and timely dispensation of medications to patients.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to promote appropriate drug therapy and pharmacological interventions.
- Manage medication therapy management (MTM) services, reviewing patient medications for safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness.
- Compliance & Regulations :
- Ensure compliance with national and international pharmacy regulations, including maintaining proper licensure, certifications, and audits.
- Develop and enforce hospital-specific protocols regarding medication safety, storage, and dispensation.
- Monitor and maintain records of controlled substances and ensure adherence to all relevant laws.
- Inventory & Procurement Management :
- Oversee inventory management, including procurement, storage, and distribution of pharmaceuticals, ensuring appropriate stock levels and minimizing shortages or wastage.
- Develop strategies for managing drug shortages, ensuring the availability of essential medications.
- Conduct regular inventory audits and manage budgetary controls for pharmaceutical expenditure.
- Education & Training :
- Provide continuous education and training to pharmacy staff on new pharmaceutical practices, technologies, and drug therapies.
- Stay updated on the latest research, drug developments, and industry trends.
- Educate hospital staff and patients about medication use, safety, and potential side effects.
- Quality Assurance & Risk Management :
- Develop and oversee quality control programs to ensure the accuracy and safety of dispensed medications.
- Address medication-related errors and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Participate in hospital-wide committees (e.G., Infection Control, Patient Safety) to improve medication safety and patient care outcomes.
Qualifications & Skills :
Education :PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm) with relevant certifications.Experience :Minimum of 15 years of experience in a Multispecialty hospital pharmacy setting, with at least 7 years in a leadership or supervisory role.Proven experience in managing a team and hospital-wide pharmacy operations.Skills :In-depth knowledge of pharmacology, medication therapy management, and clinical pharmacy practices.Strong leadership and team management skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and patients.Ability to manage budgets and inventories efficiently.Knowledge of hospital regulatory and accreditation standards.Working Conditions :
Full-time position.Some on-call availability may be required during evenings or weekends.Work is typically performed in a hospital environment.
