Role Summary
The Process Design Engineer will be responsible for developing and optimizing process designs for chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing systems. The role involves preparing engineering deliverables such as PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, equipment sizing, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and project requirements. The position also includes active participation in process scale-up, pilot trials, and technology transfer activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for new and existing systems.
- Perform mass and energy balance calculations, equipment sizing, and selection.
- Support basic and detailed engineering design for process systems, utilities, and plant modifications.
- Prepare and review process data sheets, line lists, and instrument lists.
- Participate in HAZOP, design reviews, and risk assessments.
- Provide process inputs to mechanical, instrumentation, piping, and electrical teams.
- Develop control philosophy and support automation design activities.
- Evaluate process performance and identify opportunities for optimization or debottlenecking.
- Coordinate with vendors for equipment technical clarification and design validation.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, safety, and environmental standards (for pharma / chemical projects).
- Support commissioning and troubleshooting activities during plant startup.
- Lead and support process scale-up, pilot trials, and technology transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of process design principles and chemical engineering fundamentals.Hands-on experience with simulation tools (Aspen Plus, HYSYS, ChemCAD, or equivalent).Proficiency in AutoCAD, MS Office, and process calculation tools.Familiarity with GMP, ASME, API, or ISO standards (depending on industry).Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.Ability to work effectively in cross-functional project teams.Knowledge of scale-up methodologies, pilot plant design, and technology transfer protocols.Education
B.E. / B.Tech / M.E. / M.Tech in Chemical or Mechanical EngineeringPreferred Background
Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, or EPC projects.Exposure to process equipment design such as reactors, heat exchangers, distillation columns, scrubbers, and filtration systems.Prior involvement in concept-to-commissioning lifecycle of process systems.Experience in process scale-up, pilot plant operation, and technology transfer from R&D to commercial scale.What We Offer
