About the role :

Applications are sought for the 2026 clinical year, commencing February 2026. Contracts will be offered for 12 months will possible extension. To be eligible to apply you must be PGY4+ as of February 2026.

The Division of Surgery is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatient surgical services to the ACT and surrounding region. The Division includes Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit and Admissions / Extended Day Surgery Unit, specialist surgical ward areas, medical and nursing outpatient services, ACT Trauma Service, Intensive Care Unit, Capital Region Retrieval Service and the Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit.

The Department of Anaesthesia facilitates over 24,000 anaesthetic elective and emergency procedures each year. The breadth of procedures undertaken are all encompassing (cardiac, neurosurgery, and neonatal surgery) with the exception of solid organ transplant. We operate in several facilities, primarily Canberra Hospital which is the largest tertiary and trauma facility in the region, as well as North Canberra Hospital, Calvary John James Hospital, National Capital Private Hospital and other private surgery locations in Canberra.

As the primary teaching hospital and major trauma centre for ACT and the Southern NSW region, exposure to interesting cases is a certainty.

CHS is a partner in teaching with the Australian National University, the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University. Due to these partnerships and the flexible nature of this employment opportunity, excellent research opportunities are available.

The CMO in the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine will support the pre-admission clinic, acute pain rounds and may be directed to provide support in other relevant clinical areas when needed. Part-time hours and the number of sessions will be considered and can be negotiated on offer / acceptance of a position / contract.

The successful applicant will have experience in anaesthesia with high-level skills relevant to perioperative medicine, surgical planning and acute pain management. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the mandatory administrative, governance and training requirements of medical officers within the Division.
