Role Overview
The EMS Engineer will be responsible for designing, specifying, and implementing Energy Management Systems for large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and renewable energy projects. This role requires strong technical expertise to define system requirements, evaluate vendor solutions, and ensure compliance with performance, cybersecurity, and integration standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Requirement Definition :
- Develop detailed functional and technical specifications for EMS solutions, including control architecture, communication protocols, and cybersecurity requirements.
- Define system-level requirements for integration with PCS, BMS, SCADA, and grid interfaces.
- Vendor Evaluation & Technical Assessment :
- Prepare RFP / RFQ documents and evaluate vendor proposals against technical and commercial criteria.
- Conduct FAT / SAT and ensure compliance with contractual specifications.
- System Design & Integration :
- Oversee EMS architecture design for centralized and block-level systems.
- Ensure compatibility with renewable generation, grid dispatch signals, and market data (e.g., IEX).
- Performance Optimization :
- Implement algorithms for energy arbitrage, peak shifting, reactive power support, and black start functionality.
- Validate EMS functionalities such as event logging, disturbance recording, and predictive analytics.
- Compliance & Standards :
- Ensure adherence to cybersecurity, data access security, and industry standards (IEC, UL 9540A).
- Maintain documentation for audits and regulatory compliance.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.5-10 years of experience in EMS design, deployment, or vendor evaluation for BESS / renewable projects.Strong knowledge of SCADA, Modbus TCP / IP, IEC protocols, and EMS software platforms.Hands-on experience with system integration, testing, and commissioning.Familiarity with energy market operations, grid codes, and optimization algorithms.Preferred Skills
Experience with cloud-based EMS solutions and cybersecurity frameworks.Knowledge of PCS / BMS interfaces and hybrid renewable systems.Ability to lead technical discussions and manage cross-functional stakeholders.
