JOB TITLE :
Vice President – Design & Engineering
JOB OBJECTIVE :
To lead and guide the entire Design and engineering department in delivering departmental objectives. He would be chiefly responsible for establishing the capacity of the department and continuously deliver to the capacity. He shall be responsible to Plan and assist team leaders in development, improvement and adherence to company standard procedures for the department. Steer the department as a leader with a view that engineering and detailing department leads the company in project planning and implementation by the philosophy of best quality implementation within specified timelines and budgeted costs estimates.
To also help in meeting / exceeding the customers / clients satisfaction as well as coordinate for supplying of engineering details and support as a part of project management

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
(A). FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY :
1. To ensure compliance with departmental and company common procedures for ISO 9001 compliance, by all department personnel without exception
2. To adhere to and continuously improve the departmental systems and processes such that all the requirements mentioned in the incoming QRF’s and Orders are studied and validated by competent team members.
3. To ensure preparation of basic Design and estimation quantities for quotation purpose , is done accurately & timely through the teams, such that the weights estimated weights are correct in the first submission itself.
4. To ensure proper control mechanisms are in place such that there are no overruns compared to estimated weights and quantities at Approval stage of final detailing stage.
5. To ensure that the post award detailed Engineering drawings and supportive calculations are fully illustrated with the technical details, as would facilitate for approvals by the customers / clients. Also ensure that these provide full insight into operational interface areas.
6. To handle the customer in the most effective manner by allocating the customer to the right team member (in terms of seniority), depending upon the design complexity, business volume, and the sensitivity of the customer involved.
7. To ensure upgradation and updation of standard specifications, drawings, etc. which, then could be used for various projects from time to time.
8. To attend pre-bid meetings / discussions, so as to provide timely information and extend full support to the sales department, required for filling tenders or submitting quotations to the customers.
9. To ensure that for all Projects, without exception, he or a responsible person like the group leader participates in Pre-execution meeting, with the Projects departments, so that there is comprehensive execution planning with agreement on detailed activities with specific timelines.
10. To continuously train the team on design buildings & structures assigned using Codes, Specifications & Procedures adopted by company standards, or Rational Engineering practices. Assist in carrying out the design himself in case of complicated and complex structures.
11. To ensure that the Engineering department team members finish the assigned work within timelines & agreed schedules. Continuously monitor & improve the productivity levels of engineers & team members. In case, of any delay in schedules, give out early warning signs immediately and coordinate with Drafting & Marketing department accordingly.
12. To alert the other concerned department appropriately, in case of any special and non-standard inventory items, special requirements or any discrepancy in material quantities.
13. To coordinate with plants, clients and customers by providing them with all the Technical inputs and other Engineering details as are necessary for successful and timely implementation of the projects.
14. To ensure that the detailed drawings are drawn with detailed specifications, QA requirements, Bill of materials along with work schedules
15. To assist and guide draftsman in the knitty-gritty of technical nuances and assign them with specific tasks as may be required for proper work execution from time to time.
16. To regularly coordinate & follow up with the detailing team on their assigned jobs, to make sure the design are clear to them and engineering schedules are maintained. Further, immediately review questions / clarifications raised on the designs & answer them within agreed timelines.
17. To ensure system & process are in place, followed by all team members and all work is checked prior to release to client, factory or project team.
18. To ensure that all Engineering department personnel work to established systems and procedures & strictly comply with Engineering Management and Document control procedures
19. To conduct regular Engineering meetings within the department and promote / introduce new ideas in Engineering Improvement practices, thereby make sure that there is continuous focus on up-gradation of engineering knowledge and standards.
20. To ensure adequate resources are available in the department to handle all the engineering needs of the company.
21. To maintain all drawings, manuals, documents so that they are available for regular and future use. Also ensure that drawings are updated and amended by incorporating modifications, if any and these are properly marked, recorded and filed.
(B). PEOPLE / TEAM MANAGEMENT :
22. To prepare appropriate department staffing (manpower requirement) along with relevant justification and recruit the manpower as per agreed deadlines (post approval from COO / CEO)
23. To finalize the team members KRAs and ensure that each member is allocated their performance KRAs & regularly review their performance. Also conduct performance appraisal exercise, in line with the process defined by HR deptt.
24. To handhold / coach / guide / develop the immediate reportees, so that they can successfully handle all work challenges and move up on the career path
25. To assess from time to time the required gaps in skills, knowledge and training, thereby organize periodic development initiatives so that they can respond to technical design / drawing requirements without problems, from time to time.
26. To ensure that proper reports / MIS & any other relevant data is duly maintained, generated, submitted to relevant authority & also duly filed in the department.
27. To ensure that all department personnel follow ethical code of conduct & strictly comply to established departmental systems & policies
28. Any other matter as may be assigned by the Management.
Requirements
Education
B.E. / B.Tech in Civil / Structural / Mechanical Engineering from a reputed institute. M.Tech / M.E. preferred.
Experience
Minimum 18–25 years of experience in Design & Engineering, with at least 5–8 years in a leadership role heading large design or structural engineering teams in the PEB / Steel Structure / EPC industry.
