Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced ICU Liaison Nurse Consultants to join the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within Emergency Services at Northern Health.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres, and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role:

This role requires an experienced and highly skilled Critical Care Registered Nurse with advanced clinical expertise in the management of clinically deteriorating patients. The ICU Liaison Nurse Consultant plays a pivotal role in providing hospital-wide clinical leadership, advanced assessment, and escalation support to inpatient wards, ensuring timely intervention and safe patient outcomes.

The ICU Liaison Nurse Consultant works collaboratively with medical, nursing, and allied health teams to support patients with complex care needs, facilitate patient flow, and strengthen clinical governance across the organisation

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to and manage clinically deteriorating patients across the Epping site
• Provide advanced nursing assessment and intervention for high-acuity and complex patients
• Coordinate and respond to MET, Code Blue, and REACH activations, including follow-up care
• Undertake pre- and post-ICU discharge surveillance, supporting safe and timely patient flow
• Act as a clinical bridge between wards and ICU, facilitating escalation where required
• Deliver expert consultation, education, and coaching to medical, nursing, and allied health staff
• Participate in TPN service delivery, quality improvement, audit, and incident review
• Contribute to quality improvement, clinical governance, research, and service development initiatives
• Promote person-centred, culturally safe, and evidence-based care
• Supporting patient flow and continuity of care between ICU, Emergency Department, and inpatient wards
• Ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with EMR, NSQHS Standards (including Standard 8), and organisational policies

About You:

You are a senior critical care nurse who thrives in a dynamic, system-wide leadership role and is passionate about patient safety, clinical excellence, and mentoring others.

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse
• A postgraduate qualification in Critical Care Nursing (ICU)
• Minimum 5 years recent post-qualification experience.
• Demonstrated experience working in an advanced clinical role within an ICU environment
• Demonstrated capacity to work independently and provide clinical leadership across Critical care environment
• Proven advanced clinical assessment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
• Well-developed communication, leadership, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
• Experience supporting, mentoring, and guiding nursing staff in complex clinical situations
• Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and professional development
• Flexibility to work 12-hour day and night shift rotations
