Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Design Engineer – OLE to provide technical leadership, design assurance, and delivery oversight for Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) systems on Swedish Rail infrastructure projects. This role represents the highest level of technical authority within the OLE discipline, responsible for setting design direction, assuring compliance with Swedish and European standards, mentoring teams, and acting as a key technical interface with clients and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Authority
- Act as Principal Engineer / Technical Authority for OLE on Swedish Rail projects
- Define OLE system philosophies, design criteria, and technical strategies
- Provide technical assurance and signoff of OLE designs and calculations
- Lead resolution of complex technical issues, nonconformances, and design risks
- Ensure compliance with Trafikverket, EN, IEC, and applicable European standards.
Design & Delivery
- Design and Oversee delivery of OLE designs across all project stages:
- Feasibility & optioneering
- Concept and detailed design
- IFC / construction support
- Design, Review and approve:
- OLE layout plans, crosssections, and sectioning diagrams
- Wire run, dropper, and conductor allocation schedules
- Mast, portal, and foundation arrangements
- Clearance, EMC, and electrical safety studies
- Loading calculations and formal design reports (Form A / Form B)
- Ensure effective integration with Track, Signalling, Telecom, Civil, and Structures.
Client, Project & Stakeholder Interface
- Act as key technical point of contact with Swedish clients and partners
- Support bid development, technical proposals, and design methodologies
- Participate in technical workshops, design reviews, and assurance meetings
- Provide expert input during audits, independent checks, and client reviews.
People Leadership & Capability Building
- Mentor, coach, and technically develop senior and junior OLE engineers
- Define discipline best practices, standard details, templates, and workflows
- Support capability development within the Global Delivery Centre (GDC/GCC)
- Promote a strong culture of quality, safety, and engineering excellence.
Quality, Safety & Governance
- Ensure OLE designs follow safebydesign principles
- Uphold WSP Quality, HSE, and Engineering Governance frameworks
- Support continuous improvement, lessons learned, and technical innovation.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Master's degree or professional registration is preferred
Experience
- 12–18+ years of experience in Railway OLE / Electrification design
- Extensive experience on mainline electrified railways
- Demonstrated experience as Lead / Principal Engineer on major rail projects
- Strong exposure to European or Nordic rail projects (Sweden highly preferred)
- Experience working within international, multidisciplinary delivery environments
Technical Expertise
- Indepth knowledge of:
- Catenary and contact wire systems
- Autotensioning and switching arrangements
- Mast, portal, and foundation design interfaces
- Electrical clearances, EMC, and safety compliance
- Strong understanding of system engineering and interface management
- Ability to independently review and approve complex calculations and designs
Software & Digital Tools
- Bentley MicroStation (essential)
- OLE tools such as: OLEMI / UKMS / Mark3B (or equivalent international platforms)
- Bentley OpenRail and ProjectWise (preferred)
- AutoCAD and related CAD/BIM environments.
Professional & Behavioural Competencies
- Recognised technical authority with sound engineering judgement
- Strategic thinker with strong problemsolving skills
- Excellent communication skills for client and leadership engagement.
- Strong mentoring and peopledevelopment mindset
- Ability to work autonomously with accountability at senior level.
