Job description

Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service (WWHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that prides itself on delivering a range of health services to the community in a style and manner that makes clients feel welcome and comfortable. WWHS operates a range of clinics and provides a range of primary health care and other services which include our Main Clinic (acute and general care), Gudbinji Chronic Disease Clinic, Binjari Health Centre, Women and Children’s Health, Men’s Health and a Dental Clinic.

The Wurli Community Services team aims to achieve better outcomes in early intervention, treatment and management of mental health and other social and emotional wellbeing concerns for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through an integrated approach in a primary health care setting.

The Practice Lead – SEWB is a new position designed to strengthen cultural safety, draw on lived experience, and support career pathways for Aboriginal staff. Although the title is Practice Lead, the position works as a senior practice specialist — providing expert cultural, clinical, and practice support rather than line management. This role is designated for an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander person, in line with National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) funding requirements and the priorities of the community-controlled sector.

The Practice Lead works closely with coordinators, managers, and frontline staff to embed safe and effective practice across Wurli Community Services. The role makes sure that triage, risk assessment, and brief interventions are culturally safe, trauma-informed, and healing-focused, particularly where people are facing complex challenges such as addiction, housing insecurity, child safety concerns, domestic and family violence, justice involvement, and mental health issues. The Practice Lead also builds workforce capacity through mentoring and reflective practice, encourages integration across services and partnerships, and supports ongoing quality improvement and accreditation.

Indigenous and / or Torres Strait Islander persons are encouraged to apply

Applicants must be able to demonstrate : –

  • Strong working and / or lived experience within Social Determinant programs (such as SEWB, AOD, housing, DFV, or justice), with demonstrated cultural knowledge, practice capability, and commitment to Aboriginal community wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated expertise in SEWB practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including culturally informed triage, risk assessment, safety planning, and brief interventions.
  • Experience as a senior practice specialist, with skills in mentoring, reflective practice, and supporting Aboriginal workforce development (without direct line management).
  • Ability to use client information systems and standard computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, email, and data entry tools) to support case notes, reporting, and communication. Training can be provided where required.
