The Scientific Applications team develops technology strategy, architecture strategy, and serves as an implementation engine for new software product introductions and sustaining & support releases. Our technology portfolio enables outstanding scientific analysis, laboratory workflow, automation, and instrumentation that bring high value for our customers.
The Sr. Manager of Software Engineering will lead software development and delivery for a team building the next generation of software as part of the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Software Business Unit portfolio. The individual will provide operational & technical leadership for the team and will be accountable to partner with technical collaborators & senior leadership to deliver on business objectives.
The incumbent will also provide thought leadership and execution on initiatives relating to talent development, process improvements and new technology adoption.
Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and develop a software engineering team of ~30 members, fostering excellence, innovation, and accountability
Apply deep technical expertise to lead day-to-day software development activities, including design strategies, implementation, and the review and test of software applications across a range of deployment environments
Champion software engineering excellence, guide technology evaluations, and ensure architectural alignment. Lead teams to deliver secure, scalable, and high quality enterprise-grade solutions
Identify & deliver on opportunities to improve quality, accelerate delivery, and enhance system reliability, balancing innovation with operational stability
Cultivate & sustain a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, inclusion, and accountability, empowering teams to experiment, share knowledge, and grow technical depth
Build & sustain strong partnerships with global teams in Software Engineering, Product Management, Testing, DevSecOps, Technical Writing and Support
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields
12+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, including substantial hands-on development experience in one or more modern programming ecosystems (e.g., Go, .NET Core, Node.js).
Solid experience with modern JavaScript / TypeScript frameworks and design patterns that align with React and Next.js principles
Strong computer engineering fundamentals and object-oriented programming skills
Experience in developing enterprise-grade software products (on-prem and SaaS), with strong, demonstrable skills in software architecture & design
Experience developing with cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred) and building integrations with diverse environments (on-prem, hybrid, cloud)
Demonstrated success in guiding software development teams through the design, development, and delivery of commercially released software products
Proven interpersonal skills and passion for developing and mentoring teams
Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with development, product management, project management, operations and services teams
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with cultural fluency across geographies
Preferred Skills :
Background in life sciences domains relevant to Thermo Fisher
Certifications in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), Agile (Scrum, SAFe), DevOps
