Job description

As a Graduate Legal Officer, you will work part-time while undertaking your Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice (GDLP). Upon completion of your GDLP, you’ll commence fulltime work with the Department. This structure allows you to develop and refine your legal skills in a supportive environment while gaining exposure to a diverse range of public sector legal services and career pathways.

As a participant in the Legal Graduate Program, you will be supported to undertake a variety of legal tasks and experiences that contribute to your professional growth. These opportunities are designed to help you :

Build confidence and competence through hands-on legal work, including research, drafting and assisting with straightforward legal matters.
Develop professional judgment by engaging with real-world legal issues and clients.
Strengthen your understanding of government legal practice and the broader policy and legislative environment.

In addition to on-the-job experience, you will participate in a structured professional development program that includes skills-based workshops, mentoring and coaching, and networking opportunities.

Period of Appointment

Fixed term appointment from February 2026 to December 2027.

Hours per fortnight

Part time hours structured around Legal Practice Course until completion.

73.5 hours per fortnight following completion of course.

Duties

Undertake the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course.

To assist experienced legal practitioners in relation to basic and routine matters.

Undertake research, analyse information, make recommendations and provide advice.

Develop and maintain relevant documentation such as files, plans, reports and correspondence.

Liaise with stakeholders where required.

Provide secretariat administrative and general support as required.

Essential Requirements

Have graduated with a minimum of a three-year undergraduate or postgraduate legal degree in the last three years or have graduated by the end of January 2026 (qualifying degrees as rated by the Australian Qualifications Framework are at level 7 or above)

Current enrolment in the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course at the Centre for Legal Studies.

Desirable requirements

A Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People.

Pre-employment (National Police Record) checks for : Arson and fire setting, violent crimes and crimes against the person, sex-related offences, drug and alcohol related offences, crimes involving dishonesty, deception and / or conspiracy, making false declarations, malicious damage and destruction to property, serious traffic offences, crimes against public order or relating to the Administration of Law and Justice, Executive or the Legislative Power.
