Purpose And Scope
The position is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise-level messaging solutions using Microsoft Exchange technologies. This role ensures the reliability, scalability, and security of email systems across the organization. The architect collaborates with cross-functional teams to align messaging infrastructure with business needs and technology strategies, while also serving as a subject matter expert for Exchange-related initiatives.
Responsibilities And Accountabilities
- Design and oversee the architecture of Microsoft Exchange environments (on-premises, hybrid, and cloud-based) to meet organizational requirements.
- Lead and govern migration projects from legacy email systems to Microsoft Exchange Online or hybrid configurations, ensuring delivery across global teams.
- Direct, develop and maintenance of architecture, configurations, and operational procedures, ensuring consistent standards across regions.
- Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning for messaging systems.
- Oversee system monitoring, performance optimization and tuning strategies, setting expectations and driving operational excellence across teams.
- Provide expert-level support and resolution of complex Exchange-related issues through team leadership and vendor management.
- Collaborate with security, compliance and governance teams to enforce email security policies, including spam filtering, data loss prevention (DLP), and encryption.
- Stay current with Microsoft technologies and industry trends to recommend improvements and innovations.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on best practices in Exchange administration and architecture, and provide inputs to their performance review.
- Participate in capacity planning, licensing management, and budgeting for messaging infrastructure.
- Collaborate closely with the information protection, security operations and other advisory groups to gather requirements and implement configurations to ensure compliant configuration of Microsoft Exchange.
Required Qualifications
7+ years of experience managing Microsoft Exchange environments, with at least 3 years in a team lead role preferred.Design and architect Microsoft Exchange environments (on-premises, hybrid, and cloud-based) to meet organizational requirements.Lead migration projects from legacy email systems to Microsoft Exchange Online or hybrid configurations.Develop and maintain documentation for architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning for messaging systems.Monitor system performance and implement tuning and optimization strategies.Provide expert-level support and troubleshooting for Exchange-related issues.Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for automation and administration.Collaborate with security teams to enforce email security policies, including spam filtering, data loss prevention (DLP), and encryption.Stay current with Microsoft technologies and industry trends to recommend improvements and innovations.Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on best practices in Exchange administration and architecture.Participate in capacity planning, licensing management, and budgeting for messaging infrastructure.Preferred Qualifications
Microsoft Certified : Messaging Administrator Associate or equivalent certification, AZ 900 (Azure Fundamentals).Experience with Microsoft 365 Defender, Purview, and other security / compliance tools.Experience with Microsoft 365 suite and Exchange Online Protection (EOP).Knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements related to email systems (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR).Experience with enterprise monitoring tools and ticketing systems (e.g., SCOM, ServiceNow).Background in supporting large-scale enterprise messaging environments.Knowledge of ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.Experience with agile delivery practices.Working Environment
