Medical Coding Specialist
Responsibilities
- The duties and responsibilities of a Medical Coder vary from one healthcare
facility to another. The main duty of a Medical Coder is assigning codes to
medical procedures and diagnoses.
Making sure that codes are assigned correctly and sequenced appropriately asper government and insurance regulations
Complying with medical coding guidelines and policiesReceiving and reviewing patients' charts and documents for verification andaccuracy
Following up and clarifying any information that is not clear to other staffmembers
Collecting information made by the Physician from different sources to preparemonthly reports
Implementing strategic procedures and choosing strategies and evaluationmethods that provide correct results
Examining any medical malpractice that has been reported by analyzing andidentifying the medical procedures, diagnoses or events that lead to the
negligence
Complies with hospital and medical facility policies, including those relating toHIPAA and Joint Commission.
Performs other clerical duties and tasks to improve provider productivity andclinic workflow as assigned.
Assign codes to diagnoses and procedures, using ICD (InternationalClassification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes
Ensure codes are accurate and sequenced correctly in accordance withgovernment and insurance regulations
Follow up with the provider on any documentation that is insufficient or unclearCommunicate with other clinical staff regarding documentationSearch for information in cases where the coding is complex or unusualReceive and review patient charts and documents for accuracyReview the previous day&aposs batch of patient notes for evaluation and codingEnsure that all codes are current and activeRequired skills and qualifications
5-7 years of experience as Medical CoderMedical coding or successful completion of a certification program (CPC)Bachelor's degree with pre-health career track preferredAdministrative writing skillsReporting skillsOrganizational skillsRecord-keepingMicrosoft Office skillsProfessionalism, confidentiality, and organizationTypingSolid oral and written communication skillsEducation, Experience, and Licensing Requirements :Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminologyExpert with ICD-X codes and CPT ProceduresSkilled in operating various medical record software and hardware, word-processing, and database software programs
