Job Description : Geotechnical Core Design Engineer
Qualification : M.Tech in Geotechnical Engineering / Rock Engineering
Experience : 5–8 Years
Domain Expertise : Underground Metro, Tunnels, Underground Structures, Dam, Water Supply Project.
Role Summary
The Geotechnical Core Design Engineer will be responsible for providing advanced geotechnical and rock engineering design support for underground metro and tunnel projects. The role includes geotechnical analysis, design of excavation and support systems, interpretation of ground investigation data, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out detailed geotechnical design for underground metro, tunnels, shafts, and cut-and-cover structures.
- Interpret geotechnical investigation results, including borelogs, geophysical data, and laboratory test reports.
- Perform numerical modelling using PLAXIS, FLAC, RS2, GeoStudio, or similar geotechnical analysis tools.
- Design temporary and permanent support systems (NATM, TBM tunnels, shafts, retaining structures, rock support).
- Prepare geotechnical design reports, design calculations, DBR / GDR, and technical notes.
- Provide solutions for ground improvement, dewatering, stabilization, and rock reinforcement.
- Coordinate closely with structural, alignment, architecture, and construction teams.
- Support in developing method statements, construction staging, and technical specifications.
- Conduct technical reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering studies.
- Provide geotechnical support during construction for issue resolution and field decisions.
Skills & Technical Competencies
Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and ground–structure interaction.Good experience in underground structures (TBM / NATM tunnels, metro stations, deep excavations).Proficient in advanced numerical modelling software (PLAXIS 2D / 3D, FLAC, RS2, etc.).Ability to interpret complex geotechnical data and propose practical design solutions.Knowledge of relevant design codes (IS, IRC, Eurocode, BS, etc.).Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.Preferred Background
Experience with major metro, tunnel, or underground infrastructure projects.Exposure to rock engineering and stabilization design.Experience preparing geotechnical design deliverables for large EPC / consultancy projects.Familiarity with ground improvement techniques and dewatering design.
