Roles and Responsibilities
Understand the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy, and the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS)
Report any environmental noncompliance and / or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines
Provide support and advice to the assigned vessels on all marine related aspects such as, but not limited to :
Navigational best practices
Weather and voyage routing advice
Cargo management, cargo planning and conflict resolution
Input into and guidance to the vessel’s Masters on Dangerous Goods Risk Assessments
Pertinent information relating to new trade route for assigned vessels
Conduct vessel internal audits to ascertain the level of implementation and compliance with company Management System
Conduct safety and environmental inspections of the vessels in the fleet to gauge the vessel condition and level of compliance with Environmental Management System
Provide on-board training to close any knowledge gaps and mentor senior shipboard management where required
Communicate the company expectations, objectives and targets when onboard company vessels
Mentor and train of new Marine Managers and Roving Marine Superintendents during shipboard visits and in the local office
Take the lead in complex projects requiring additional knowledge and experience in the field of work
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, tracking, statistics, and reporting of assigned vessels, as per Management System and other related systems, including :
Incident & Near Miss reporting from assigned vessels
Follow up and closure of incidents, audit and inspection deficiencies and CARs
Assist in compiling statistical data and performance / KPIs for assigned vessels
Follow up on external audits, PSC inspections, flag state inspections and customer inspections where applicable
Conducting regular SMS review for assigned vessels
Review existing and draft new procedures, policies and reference material in the Management System related to marine and occupational safety aspects of operation
Conduct onboard incident investigation and follow-up corrective and preventive actions are implemented onboard assigned vessels
Conduct orientation and preparation of senior officers visiting the office
Support training efforts. Provides input on marine related competencies and training courses. Conducts interviews and assessments of prospective senior deck officers (promotion or new joiners)
Act as Deputy Company Security Officer
Participate in the company’s emergency response team and supporting the vessel and Emergency Management Team for all marine related aspects
Represent the company in industry related forums and attends meetings with customers and governmental agencies
Perform other duties as required
Requirements
Minimum of three years of experience in a similar role in a ship owner or ship management company
Qualifications in auditing and occupational health & safety related disciplines
Full understanding of quality management principles and their application and working knowledge of relevant shipping industry regulations, procedures, and instructions
Demonstrates leadership and professionalism
Proficiency with basic computer applications and Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel)
Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
Class 1 Certificate – Master Mariner
Experience in shipping or containership industry
Understanding and experience with ISO management systems
Certification to conduct internal audits
Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice
Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections
Availability via a mobile device outside of office hours
