The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched to curb open defecation in urban areas, especially in slums, and has already led to the construction or refurbishment of more than 6,15,000 community and public toilets, according to a 2021 PRS India report. Despite this progress, studies continue to highlight the challenges women face when using these facilities. While women use Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs) or Community Toilets (CTs), they face various challenges. They face a higher risk of abuse and sexual harassment in walking to the toilets (Gupta and Pal). Women have to spend much more time in toilets as compared to men (Asia Development Bank), and poor hygiene and lack of cleanliness are more of a challenge for them because of how they use toilets. Women have no agency in the design of toilets or their locations. The design is men-centric. The study aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), a key government initiative aimed at improving sanitation and reducing open defecation. By addressing gender-sensitive challenges in community toilets, the project supports SBM’s goals of enhancing public health and clean water access, as improved sanitation reduces waterborne diseases. Additionally, it promotes gender equity and sustainable development, which are integral to India government’s initiative Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme.
