Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Microsoft Data Governance Engineer to lead the design, deployment, and management of end-to-end governance, compliance, and information protection frameworks leveraging Microsoft Purview, Microsoft 365, Azure, Power Platform and related technologies. This pivotal role ensures data integrity, regulatory compliance, and secure collaboration across cloud and on-premises environments. You will work closely with IT, legal, compliance, security, and business stakeholders to implement best practices, support enterprise adoption, and drive continuous improvements in data governance and compliance.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
- 7+ years of overall IT experience, including 5+ years in Microsoft 365 and Azure governance, compliance, or security engineering.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview in enterprise environments.
- Strong knowledge of Azure architecture, services, security best practices, and identity / access management (Entra ID, Microsoft Identity).
- Experience with Microsoft 365 administration, security, governance and compliance configurations.
- Experience with Power Platform administration, security, governance and compliance configurations.
- Hands-on experience with data catalog / governance tools.
- Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Azure CLI, REST APIs).
- Advanced understanding of regulatory and compliance frameworks (GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, SOX, ISO 27001, GLBA, etc...).
- Experience leading cross-functional teams, managing multiple projects, and aligning governance initiatives with organizational goals.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills; able to resolve conflicts and present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Governance Strategy, Architecture & Implementation
Develop and maintain scalable governance models for Microsoft 365, Azure, and Power Platform environments.Architect, design, and implement Microsoft Purview solutions, including Data Map, Data Catalog, Data Insights, DLP, Information Protection, and Compliance Manager.Define and execute phased rollout strategies and transition plans (e.g., Tech dept deprecation, Purview auto-labeling).Ensure robust and secure integration of Purview with Azure core services (Synapse Analytics, Data Factory, Power BI, etc.) and Microsoft 365 applications.Define and enforce Power Platform governance policies, including Data Loss Prevention (DLP) rules and environment strategy.Implement Power Platform environment provisioning standards and manage admin-only mode for controlled deployments.Policy, Compliance & Risk Management
Create, implement, and enforce policies for data classification, retention, labeling, DLP, and access control aligned with business and regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, SOX, ISO 27001).Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to align governance frameworks with internal and external standards.Monitor and manage data access, usage, and compliance using Purview’s advanced governance tools.Analyze audit logs and compliance reports to identify risks and recommend mitigation strategies.Monitor and report on usage analytics, solution compliance, and adherence to organizational standards.Collaborate with security and compliance teams to align Power Platform usage with Microsoft Purview policies for data classification, sensitivity labels, and retention.Ensure all citizen development activities follow approved templates, connectors, and guardrails.Integration, Automation & Optimization
Integrate governance controls with Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, Entra ID, Azure Data Factory, and third-party platforms.Develop automation scripts (PowerShell, Azure CLI, REST APIs) to streamline policy deployment, metadata ingestion, data scanning, and reporting.Automate metadata ingestion and data lineage tracking workflows; optimize Purview health and performance.Lifecycle management of data and solutions across M365 and Power PlatformEnablement & Collaboration
Lead business-focused consulting engagements, defining frameworks and best practices for successful Purview deployments.Guide and train IT teams, data owners, and business stakeholders on data governance, risk management, and compliance best practices.Deliver workshops, technical training, and comprehensive as-built documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.Act as a trusted advisor, consistently maintaining confidence and providing clear guidance through technical and organizational challenges.Monitoring, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Implement dashboards and alerts to monitor policy compliance, data access, and governance health.Stay current on Microsoft Purview updates, Power Platform / Azure / M365 platform changes, and cloud data governance trends.Proactively assess emerging risks and regulatory changes, recommending enhancements and evaluating alternative solutions.Preferred Qualifications
Microsoft certifications : Security, Compliance, Identity, Power Platform, M365.Familiarity with Agile or DevOps methodologies.Proficiency with Power Platform developmentExperience with third-party and hybrid data sources, and governance challenges in mixed environments.Experience with Microsoft Defender, Entra, Intune, Sentinel, and related tools.Please share your CV to annapurna.t@locuz.com
