JD for the Core Network Engineer
Hours : Initially Monday - Friday 9 : 00 am to 5 : 30 pm during training; Post training Friday - Tuesday
1 : 00 am to 9 : 30 am BST
Overall purpose of the job :
The Core Network Infrastructure team are responsible for all aspects of the ever-changing core
network infrastructure environment. This team are responsible for carrying out core network projects,
predominantly based on high-capacity connectivity, MPLS and Optical Transmission network
elements as well as providing advanced support to engineering operations team.
The role is based offshore and the working hours are aligned to overlap to a certain extent normal UK
working hours for cross-team communications as well as to cover out of hours maintenance windows
for network changes that cannot be executed during normal hours.
Key responsibilities for this job :
- To deliver assigned projects that may involve one or more of the below activities
- Network change related planning and remote execution activities
- Liaising with internal and external supplier teams as required
- Carry out software upgrades IP and Optical network elements during out of hours
maintenance windows
Remotely oversee hardware upgrades on IP and Optical network elementsRemotely support changes / upgrades on the Fixed Networks involving PON topologiesTo be available for out of hours work as requiredAny other fair and reasonable task or duty assigned to you by your manager, or other seniorExponential-e Ltd staff member
Knowledge and experience required :
Experience working within a Service Provider environment on the core network architectureExperience working within a multi-vendor network environment - Cisco and Nokia are relevantSolid foundational networking principles, with a desire to learn furtherAdvanced knowledge of routers, switches, network security conceptsExperience and good knowledge of Ethernet, IP / MPLS protocols and operationAdvanced skill in understanding and configuring routing protocol operation - BGP, OSPF, ISISAdvanced IP Addressing and Subnetting knowledge – IPv4 & IPv6Advanced skill in understanding and configuring of switching technologies – Spanning TreeProtocol, VLANs, Dot1q, QinQ.
A good knowledge of other network principles such as DNS, MX RecordsOther technologies – VPLS (E-Lan), E-Line, L3 VPN, EVPN, DSL, VRRPExcellent communication skillsKnowledge and experience with the following vendors would be advantageous :
