The job description of a Site Civil Engineer is to serve as the primary technical, supervisory, and organizational manager at a construction site. They are the link between the design team and the on-the-ground construction crews, ensuring that the project is built safely, on time, within budget, and in strict accordance with the approved engineering drawings and specifications.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Implementation and Control
- Setting Out and Surveying : Accurately set out the location and levels for all permanent and temporary works (e.g., foundations, column centers, road alignments) using surveying equipment.
- Drawing Interpretation : Read, interpret, and manage all engineering drawings, specifications, and design documents. Act as the main technical advisor to subcontractors and the workforce.
- Quality Assurance (QA) & Quality Control (QC) : Oversee and ensure that all materials used and work performed meet the required quality standards and specifications (e.g., concrete slump tests, rebar placement, material compliance).
- T echnical Problem Solving : Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve any technical issues or unexpected deficiencies that arise on-site, often proposing practical, alternative solutions.
Site Supervision and Management
Supervise Operations : Day-to-day supervision and monitoring of the site labor force, subcontractors, and construction activities.Resource Management : Plan and organize the efficient allocation of labor, plant, materials, and equipment to meet the project schedule.Scheduling and Progress : Monitor construction progress against the approved project schedule (e.g., Primavera, MS Project). Identify and report any potential delays.Coordination and Communication : Liaise effectively with the Project Manager, architects, mechanical / electrical / plumbing (MEP) engineers, quantity surveyors, and material suppliers.3. Safety, Compliance, and Documentation
Health and Safety : Rigorously enforce site safety protocols and health and safety regulations, conducting regular inspections to ensure a safe working environment.Regulatory Compliance : Ensure all construction activities comply with local authority regulations, permits, and relevant building codes.Documentation and Reporting : Maintain meticulous on-site records, including daily site diaries, progress reports, material consumption reports, inspection requests, and quality control documentation.Budget Support : Assist the Quantity Surveyor or Project Manager by monitoring material usage, checking quantities, and providing data for cost-control reports.Required Qualifications and Skills
Education :
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
Technical Skills :
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD), surveying equipment, and project management scheduling tools.
Core Competencies :
Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, excellent written and verbal communication, and capabilities to manage and motivate a diverse construction team.
