The Project Manager oversees and manages mechanical design and engineering projects from concept to completion within an office environment. This role focuses on planning, coordination, design review, documentation control, team leadership, and communication. The Project Manager ensures that all engineering deliverables meet quality standards, project timelines, and client expectations while coordinating closely with internal design teams, management, and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Planning & Coordination
- Develop complete project plans, engineering schedules, and resource allocation strategies.
- Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, and timelines in alignment with client and management requirements.
- Conduct feasibility assessments, risk evaluations, and technical planning before project start.
- Prepare and monitor work breakdown structures (WBS) and detailed engineering timelines.
2. Team Leadership & Management
Lead and manage office-based mechanical design teams (design engineers, CAD engineers, draftsmen).Assign tasks according to skillsets, evaluate performance, and ensure timely completion of deliverables.Conduct regular coordination meetings, guide team members technically, and resolve internal issues.Mentor junior engineers and support their technical and professional development.3. Technical & Engineering Responsibilities
Review and approve mechanical designs, CAD models, drawings, specifications, and calculations.Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with industry codes, standards, and project requirements.Coordinate with design, R&D, quality, and manufacturing teams for technical alignment.Provide engineering solutions for design challenges and ensure accuracy of documentation.Oversee design optimization, system integration, and technical detailing.4. Project Execution & Monitoring (Office Only)
Monitor the progress of all design and engineering activities within the office environment.Track project milestones, budgets, and deliverables to ensure timely delivery.Coordinate with procurement and planning teams for design-related inputs and technical documentation.Maintain updated project records, revisions, drawings, BOM lists, and version control.Generate weekly / monthly project reports for management.5. Client, Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients regarding design reviews, technical clarifications, and project discussions.Handle coordination with consultants, manufacturers, and vendors for design data and approval processes.Lead online meetings, presentations, and document reviews with clients and stakeholders.Manage conflict resolution, align expectations, and ensure high customer satisfaction.6. Communication & Email Handling
Manage all project-related communication via email, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and timely responses.Draft, review, and distribute technical documents, meeting minutes, proposals, and reports.Maintain organized communication flow across teams and external parties.Ensure documentation accuracy and proper filing for all correspondence.7. Documentation & Compliance
Maintain and control all project documentation including drawings, specifications, calculations, BOQs, and revision logs.Ensure adherence to engineering standards, company procedures, and quality guidelines.Coordinate internal design reviews, audits, and document approvals.Manage document control systems and ensure traceability of all design changes.8. Budget & Cost Control
Prepare cost estimates and BOQs for mechanical systems based on design data.Monitor and control engineering budgets and ensure cost-effective solutions.Evaluate and implement cost-saving opportunities during the design phase.9. Risk & Issue Management
Identify design risks, technical issues, and potential delays early in the project.Develop mitigation plans and implement corrective actions proactively.Ensure smooth workflow and minimize rework through clear planning and communication.10. Quality Assurance
Ensure all engineering deliverables undergo proper quality checks and meet required standards.Conduct internal design reviews and coordinate cross-functional technical approvals.Maintain high-quality documentation and accuracy of all project outputs.Required Qualifications & Experience
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (Masters degree preferred).Minimum 10+ years of experience in mechanical design and project management.Strong background in 3D modeling, mechanical drafting, engineering design, and documentation.Proficiency in CAD / CAE software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, ANSYS, etc.).Experience managing engineering design teams in an office environment.Excellent communication skills (email, verbal, written).Strong leadership, analytical, and decision-making abilities.Experience in document control, revision management, and project reporting.Experience in handling international clients.Key Skills
