Project Title : Resilience in Transition : A Longitudinal Study of Post-Tsunami Housing Reconstruction and Livelihood Revitalization in Vulnerable Coasts of India

Position Details :

  • Designation : Research Assistant (RA)
  • Number of Positions : One (1)
  • Duration : Initially for 12 months , extendable based on performance and project requirements up to the project period
  • Remuneration : ₹37,000 per month (consolidated, as per ICSSR rules)

Project Overview :

The ICSSR-funded project ' Resilience in Transition ' is a multi-institutional longitudinal study examining the long-term social, economic, and spatial transformation of coastal settlements rebuilt after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. It seeks to understand how post-disaster housing reconstruction and livelihood interventions have shaped community resilience, social well-being, and built-environment adaptation across multiple states in India.

The project involves extensive fieldwork, qualitative and quantitative data collection, GIS mapping, documentation of housing typologies, and stakeholder interviews in collaboration with academic and community partners.

Role Description

The Research Assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators to support the execution of the project. Key responsibilities include :

  • Literature Review & Secondary Research
  • Conduct systematic literature reviews on post-disaster housing, resilience theory, and livelihood reconstruction.
  • Compile and annotate relevant reports, journal articles, and policy documents.
  • Fieldwork & Data Collection
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and conducting field visits to selected coastal sites in Nagapattinam, & Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.
  • Facilitate interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory mapping exercises in coordination with local partners.
  • Ensure ethical data collection, translation, and transcription protocols are followed.
  • Data Management & Analysis
  • Manage qualitative and quantitative datasets using Excel / SPSS / Atlas.ti or equivalent software.
  • Assist in GIS mapping, documentation of settlement morphology, and photographic surveys.
  • Documentation & Reporting
  • Prepare progress reports, data summaries, and visual documentation.
  • Draft and edit research papers, project reports, and conference submissions.
  • Support dissemination activities such as workshops, stakeholder consultations, and academic publications.
  • Administrative & Logistical Support
  • Maintain communication and coordination between collaborating institutions.
  • Manage project documentation, travel arrangements, and expense records as per ICSSR guidelines.
  • Qualifications

    Post-Graduate Degree in any social sciences discipline or Architecture / Urban Planning / Geography / Sociology / Disaster Management / Environmental Studies or relevant allied field, with minimum 55% marks (or equivalent CGPA).

    Demonstrated research aptitude through dissertation work, publications, or previous research experience.

    Strong writing, documentation, and analytical skills.

    Proficiency in English; knowledge of Tamil will be an added advantage.

    Desirable Qualifications :

  • Prior experience in field-based social or environmental research , preferably in post-disaster or community development contexts.
  • Working knowledge of GIS, AutoCAD, or environmental simulation tools .
  • Familiarity with ICSSR, DST, or other government-funded project protocols .
  • Capacity to travel independently and engage with local communities sensitively.
