The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is the premier institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education in India. Founded in 1909 with the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India, and the Maharaja of Mysore, IISc has grown to have 39 departments, units, or centres, 3500 students, and about 500 academic and scientific staff. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary research and collaborates with industry and society to conduct translational research.

This internship is at the Evo-phylo lab , headed by Prof. Praveen Karanth, at the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) . Our lab specialises in evolutionary ecology, using molecular phylogenetics and phylogenomics to answer questions in character evolution, molecular systematics, phylogeography, and biogeography.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site Intern role located in Bengaluru at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). It can also be part of a thesis project (preferably Master's).The intern will be associated with a PhD student investigating troglomorphic (cave-dwelling) species in India . The project utilises cutting-edge sequencing technology and bioinformatics to analyse, annotate, and discover species living in extreme niches devoid of light.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a background in biological sciences, particularly biotechnology and ecology.

Basic laboratory skills in DNA extraction, as well as PCR, sequencing and NGS, would be preferred.

Familiarity with evolutionary or molecular tools is essential.

Prior field experience (sampling, ecological surveys, or related activities) will be considered an advantage.

The ideal candidate would be scientifically ambitious with good research acumen and interest towards ecology and evolution. There will be minimum supervision on this project, and the student will be expected to contribute scientifically in arguments and experimental planning.

Internship Details :

Duration : Minimum commitment of three months.

Stipend : This is an unpaid position.

Location : Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc Bangalore, with possible field components.

Start date : December 1st
