Alibaba - Data Engineer

Role: Data Engineer (Senior/Associate/Architect)

Experience Level: 4 to 12 Years

Role & Responsibilities:

• Design and own the Alibaba Cloud platform architecture aligned to an existing Azure-based reference architecture.
• Translate Azure PaaS, Kubernetes, IoT, data, and observability services into Alibaba Cloud equivalents with minimal application change.
• Define a cloud-agnostic, portable platform blueprint supporting deployments across Azure, GCP, and Alibaba Cloud.
• Lead multiple data engineering engagements on GCP, including data lakes, data warehouses, data migration, and BI solutions.
• Architect, design, and implement end-to-end data pipelines using GCP-native tools such as Dataflow, Dataproc, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Composer, and Cloud Storage.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and translate business requirements into technical architectures and non-functional specifications (availability, scalability, performance, and security).
• Design and manage data lake and data warehouse solutions leveraging BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Cloud SQL.
• Build and optimize real-time and batch data processing systems for high-volume workloads.
• Implement data validation, monitoring, and governance processes to ensure data quality and reliability.
• Drive modernization and migration of on-premise data systems to GCP.
• Partner with pre-sales teams to contribute to RFPs, RFIs, and solution design for GCP-based data projects.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering technical excellence and innovation.
• Contribute to internal assets, accelerators, and reusable GCP components to improve project delivery speed and consistency.

Must have skills:

• 3+ years of experience in architecting and delivering data engineering solutions on Alibaba Cloud.
• Strong hands-on expertise with Alibaba.
• Proficiency in ETL/ELT design and development using Apache Spark, PySpark, SQL, and Dataflow.
• Experience designing data pipelines for structured and unstructured data sources.
• Solid understanding of data modeling, data partitioning, and performance optimization in BigQuery.
• Experience with data integration tools like Cloud Data Fusion, and orchestration using Composer or Airflow.
• Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as Firestore or Bigtable.
• Good understanding of data security, IAM, VPC, and encryption policies on GCP.
• Exposure to machine learning workflows using TensorFlow, Vertex AI, or AI Platform is a plus.
• Strong understanding of modern cloud architectures (IaaS, PaaS, containers, and microservices).
• Working knowledge of BI and reporting tools such as Looker, Data Studio, or Tableau.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience leading large-scale data migration or modernization projects on Alibaba
• Experience working in agile, fast-paced environments with distributed teams.
