2. Job Summary and Purpose

The Section Head (Hull Integration – Erection) is responsible for leading and managing erection, alignment, and integration of hull structures and related mechanical systems during ship construction. The role ensures timely execution of hull integration activities including fabrication department support for installation of main engines, propulsion systems, shafting, rudders, and associated equipment. The position demands strong project execution capability, quality and safety compliance, coordination with cross-functional teams, and adherence to production schedules.

3. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Leadership & Planning

  • Plan and schedule hull erection / integration activities in line with project master schedule.
  • Allocate work to supervisors and teams, ensuring optimal resource utilization.
  • Drive micro-planning of erection and hull integration work for timely delivery.
  • Hull Integration

  • Oversee block erection and lifting / critical lifting operations and ensure safe execution.
  • Prepare a P / E schedule based on the erection schedule.
  • Communicate with previous stages (sub-assembly, unit assembly, side shell assembly, bending) to ensure material availability.
  • Estimate man-hours required to meet the monthly production plan.
  • Allocate jobs to engineers, foremen, and assistant foremen.
  • Attend daily, weekly, and monthly meetings.
  • Monitor and control field activities to maintain the schedule.
  • Conduct toolbox meetings regarding safety and quality.
  • Ensure bay discipline (absentees, unsafe working, late comings, early leaving, etc.).
  • Ensure improvement in productivity and quality by reducing repairs and reworks.
  • Maintain smooth flow of production activities inside the bay (turnover activities, material loading, etc.).
  • Conduct performance appraisal of tradesmen, assistant foremen, foremen, and engineers.
  • Coordinate with other departments (QC, YS, PEH, SCM, TMC, MIS, Safety).
  • Compile data related to block history, production, and hurdles; analyze for improvements.
  • Train subordinates.
  • Participate in quality circles, internal IMS audits, and safety audits.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance of subordinates.
  • Certify work done by vendors / sub-contractors.
  • Report to Head SCS.
  • Coordination & Interface

  • Coordinate with Electrical, Piping, HVAC, and Commissioning teams for smooth integration.
  • Resolve design issues in consultation with D&E department.
  • Facilitate quality and class inspections to ease approval.
  • Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to ISO, HSE protocols, PTW, and statutory requirements.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, and trials to meet class / owner specifications.
  • Maintain records of erection, installation, alignment, inspection, and commissioning.
  • Ensure ISO audit compliance.
  • Follow and maintain SAP protocols.
  • Operational Oversight

  • Monitor progress, resolve technical challenges, and initiate corrective measures.
  • Lead defect rectification and support after-sales / guarantee claims as required.
  • Process & Team Development

  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and train team members on erection / integration best practices.
  • 4. Qualifications, Experience and Skills

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Marine Engineering (mandatory).
  • Additional certifications in Project Management, Welding / Quality standards (IACS, ASME / ANSI, AWS, API) preferred.
  • Preferred Experience

  • 10–12 years of experience in shipbuilding / ship repair, with at least 4–5 years in hull erection / integration at a supervisory level.
  • Proven expertise in alignment, chock fastening, and hull outfitting operations.
  • Experience in commissioning, STW, and sea trials.
  • Functional and Behavioral Competency

  • Strong technical knowledge of hull erection, machinery integration, and alignment methods.
  • Effective leadership & team management.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and project execution skills.
  • Knowledge of QHSE standards and compliance requirements.
  • Strong stakeholder management and coordination skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Project Management Tools, and ERP systems
