1. Role Overview
The Senior Engineer – VIM Furnace is responsible for leading and managing all Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) furnace operations, ensuring high-quality metal production, process stability, equipment reliability, and adherence to safety and compliance standards. The role requires hands-on metallurgical expertise, strong analytical skills, and the ability to lead furnace operators and technicians.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Furnace Operation & Process Control
- Lead and supervise daily operations of the VIM furnace to meet production targets.
- Monitor and control melting parameters, vacuum levels, alloy additions, and pouring operations.
- Ensure strict adherence to metallurgical specifications and melting procedures.
- Troubleshoot process deviations and ensure corrective actions.
B. Metallurgical Quality & Documentation (Needs to be coordinate with QC department)
Review and validate heat-wise chemistry, inclusion levels, and microstructure results.Ensure adherence to quality standards for specialty alloys / Super Alloys / High Critical Alloys (as applicable).Prepare and maintain process documentation including heat logs, charge calculations, and deviation reports.Coordinate with Quality Assurance for metallurgical testing and approvals.C. Equipment Maintenance & Reliability
Coordinate preventive and predictive maintenance of VIM furnace equipment.Ensure refractory & coil condition, vacuum pumps, sensors, and instrumentation are functioning optimally.Raise work orders and coordinate with maintenance team for breakdowns.D. Safety, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
Ensure safety protocols, SWI’s procedures, Kaizen, 5S and PPE requirements are strictly followed.Promote process optimization, energy efficiency, and yield improvement initiatives.Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) for process or quality failures( and FMEA).Support audits (ISO, NADCAP, AS9100D, customer audits if applicable).E. Team Leadership
Guide operators, junior engineers, and technicians during shifts.Conduct training on SOPs, furnace handling, and metallurgical practices.Maintain manpower planning for smooth operations.3. Required Qualifications & Experience
B.Tech / B.E. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering (with metallurgical experience).5–10 years of experience in VIM Furnace, Induction Melting operations (VIM preferred).Strong knowledge of melting of high-performance alloys, vacuum technology, and furnace control systems.Hands-on understanding of charge calculations, alloying, and process metallurgy.Experience in handling PLC / SCADA-based furnace systems (advantage).4.
