Job description

Responsible to : Head of School / Principal

Responsible for : Programme Leaders, Lecturers, Associate Lecturers

The Head of Programme(s) role is a key post holder in our academic management structure. The role involves the academic leadership and line management responsibilities for Pearson programme(s) and associated staff and resources. The core responsibility will be to ensure the Higher National programme(s) meet(s) Pearson regulatory requirements, specifically around quality of teaching, learning and assessment. As Head of Programme you will assure a consistent, excellent academic experience for our students. You will ensure that there are sufficient and suitable resources and that Higher National Programme aligns with and achieve sector recognised and any relevant professional / qualifying standards. The role will be based on campus, with associated duties on-campus. You will need to have flexibility on occasions, in order to assure provision across different campuses, and across a variety of timetables, including evenings and weekend are managed to the set expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the academic and operational delivery of the Higher National Programme in line with Pearson regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure a consistent and high-quality academic student experience.
  • Monitor, review and drive enhancements to the teaching, learning and assessment of programme(s).
  • Ensure all assessments processes (marking, internal verification, standard verification, annual monitoring review) are delivered appropriately and to the required standards set by Pearson.
  • Develop relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure the academic quality of the programme. This will include Pearson as awarding organisation, Standard Verifier, Centre Quality Manager, relevant professional bodies as well as staff and students.
  • Liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the programme management is both effective and efficient. This will mean recruiting, developing and managing suitable academic staff, including managing Programme Leaders, Lecturers, Internal Verifiers, Lead Internal Verifiers, and Associate Lecturers so that they are able to perform their roles successfully.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant subject discipline
  • Teaching qualification such as Senior Fellowship (Advance HE) or willingness to work towards (within 12 months)
  • Experience of teaching, curriculum development and quality management and enhancement in a local as well as UK HE environment.
  • Appropriate digital skills in learning, teaching and assessment
  • Required Skills

  • Experience in HE academic programmes’ management – preferably UK
  • Experience of teaching, curriculum development and quality management and enhancement in a UK HE environment.
  • Demonstrable resilience and evidence of excellent management, learning and teaching.
  • Evidence of a positive impact at discipline programme level beyond own teaching.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of groups.
  • Able to demonstrate independent and self-managing working styles, with ability to work at pace and at scale.
  • Understanding EDI on academic content and relating to staff and students.
  • Able to undertake duties at different premises including any campus as required.
  • Expected to be flexible at times to work outside of normal office hours as required.
  • Expected to engage in activities associated with promotion, marketing and public outreach of the subject / programme area.
  • Preferred Skills

  • Relevant professional experience.
  • Able to participate in and develop external networks.
  • Experience of research, scholarly or enterprise and knowledge activity.
  • Evidence of high-quality publications or other outputs in research or practice.
  • Demonstrable ability to lead research projects, win bids and generate income.
