Purpose of the Position :
Strategize, develop new, and implement existing interventions that promote sustainable coexistence between communities and snakes at project site(s), using all available data, digital tools required, liaising with relevant government stakeholders, vulnerable communities, and partner organizations. This will be done in collaboration with the Director, Wildlife; Manager, Human-Wildlife Coexistence (HWC), and the global Wild Animals department at Humane World for Animals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
1. Develop strategies for strengthening Karnataka state government’s systemic response to snakebite mitigation and human-snake conflict management.
2. Analyzes the human – snake conflict management data available across the country and recommends strategic points of intervention to the Manager, Human – Wildlife Coexistence and Director, Wildlife
3. Provides strategic leadership and ensures execution of all components of ongoing interventions on Humane World and partner organization’s joint snakebite mitigation initiative in Karnataka.
4. Develops roadmaps and campaign strategies for intervention in other states and identifies relevant partners for implementation of the program including but not limited to government departments, non – profit organizations and more.
5. Works closely with Department of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka Forest Department, Department of Agriculture, and any other relevant government agencies to provide technical and policy advisory support and establish strong working relationships and leverage their reach to maximize community education and institutional capacity building across the state.
6. Lead the development and implementation of innovative mechanisms of community outreach and education across Karnataka, starting with most vulnerable or priority districts.
7. Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data on snakebite cases in regions prescribed by Manager, HWC and Director, Wildlife for strategic interventions.
8. In coordination with Manager, HWC, Director, Wildlife and partner organization, assists in identifying knowledge gaps and assists in studies to fill the same.
9. Sustain and enhance existing public outreach interventions such as WhatsApp chatbot with assistance from vendor agencies and Humane World.
10. Develop and execute media campaigns in collaboration with the communications team of Humane World. Engage with local and national media for sensitization programs.
11. Draft progress reports for donors, government partners, or any other agency as directed by Manager, HWC or Director, Wildlife.
12. Support integration of snakebite prevention and management into broader developmental agenda in coordination with Manager HWC and Director, Wildlife.
13. Represent Humane World at national and international forums to position the organization as a leader in snakebite mitigation.
14. Occasional domestic travel to represent the organization in relevant forums, with potential for international travel if needed.
15.Perform other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
Education and Experience :
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required.
A minimum of four (4) years of field experience in the development sector, wildlife protection or conservation required.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Knowledge of statistical data analysis tools and software’s preferred.
Knowledge of qualitative data analysis tools such as NVivo or equivalent preferred.
Applicant must be able to read, write and speak Kannada and English fluently.
Must possess or be willing to secure a valid driver’s license to drive a 4-wheeler and 2-wheeler.
Must be willing to travel extensively and assist in field for any allied program activities.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook etc.)
Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines, self-motivated and proactive.
Ability to multitask and be flexible with workload and assignment.
Ability to exercise sound judgement.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by delivery of quality and timely outcomes.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
