Job Summary
The Ghost Reader will be responsible for thoroughly reading and evaluating manuscripts or completed books and providing detailed, insightful, and unbiased reviews. This role requires a strong command of language, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to identify factual, logical, and structural issues within a manuscript. The Ghost Reader ensures that all content is accurate, well-structured, readable, and aligned with the book’s purpose and audience.
Key Responsibilities
1. Manuscript Reading & Review
- Read full manuscripts, drafts, or print-ready books with close attention to detail.
- Provide comprehensive reviews covering storyline flow, clarity, engagement, structure, and coherence.
- Highlight strengths, weaknesses, and actionable suggestions for improvement.
2. Fact-Checking & Accuracy Validation
Verify factual information, dates, statistics, historical references, and claims.Use fact-checking tools, databases, and research sources (e.G., Google Scholar, credible news archives).Identify inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or misleading information.3. Content Quality Assessment
Detect plot holes, logical gaps, and narrative inconsistencies.Flag grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, tone issues, and stylistic deviations.Ensure adherence to writing guidelines, genre expectations, and brand voice.4. Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with authors, editors, and the creative team to provide structured feedback.Participate in review discussions and recommend edits or enhancements.Deliver written reports summarising findings, issues, and recommendations.5. Confidentiality & Professionalism
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding unpublished manuscripts.Adhere to deadlines and ensure timely delivery of feedback and revisions.Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Background
Bachelor's degree in English, Literature, Journalism, Communications, or related field.Master’s degree preferred but not mandatory.Experience
2+ years of experience in book reviewing, editing, proofreading, or publishing.Freelance manuscript evaluation or editorial experience is an added advantage.Skills & Competencies
Exceptional reading comprehension and analytical thinking.Strong command of English grammar, style, and narrative structure.Ability to provide constructive, unbiased, and professional feedback.Familiarity with fact-checking tools, research platforms, and citation validation.Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Grammarly and PDF editing tools.Strong communication skills for written feedback and team discussions.Preferred Additional Skills (Good to Have)
Understanding of various genres : fiction, non-fiction, biographies, self-help, business, etc.Ability to analyse tone, pacing, storytelling, and reader engagement.Knowledge of AI-assisted proofreading or editing tools.
