Pipeline Design Engineer – Roles in Oil & Gas
1. Design & Engineering
Develop pipeline design calculations and drawings as per international standards (ASME, API, ISO, DNV, etc.).
Design onshore and offshore pipelines, flowlines, trunklines, and gathering systems.
Perform route selection studies considering terrain, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
Prepare P&IDs, GA drawings, alignment sheets, and material take-off (MTO).
Ensure proper pipeline sizing, wall thickness, and material selection based on process requirements and operating conditions.
2. Technical Studies & Analysis
Conduct stress analysis, surge / hydraulic analysis, and pipeline integrity checks.
Carry out corrosion studies, cathodic protection design, and coating / insulation specifications.
Perform risk assessment, HAZOP / HAZID reviews, and design safety studies.
Evaluate crossing methods for rivers, roads, railways, and other utilities (HDD, micro-tunneling, trenching).
3. Project Execution
Support FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) and Detailed Engineering stages.
Prepare design basis, specifications, datasheets, and construction scope of work.
Coordinate with civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation teams for integrated pipeline design.
Review vendor documents, technical bids, and ensure compliance with project requirements.
4. Construction & Commissioning Support
Provide engineering support during construction, hydrotesting, and commissioning.
Review and resolve site queries, design deviations, and field modifications.
Ensure as-built drawings are prepared and updated.
5. Regulatory & Standards Compliance
Ensure pipeline design complies with client, statutory, and international regulations.
Prepare documents for approvals from local authorities and environmental agencies.
Adhere to safety, environmental, and quality standards in all deliverables.
6. Coordination & Documentation
Interface with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams for smooth project execution.
Maintain technical documentation, reports, and design records.
Participate in design reviews, progress meetings, and audits.
Requirements
Pipeline design codes (ASME B31.4, B31.8, DNV-ST-F101), AutoCAD, Caesar II / Stress analysis software, Pipeline simulation tools (e.g., PipeSim, AFT Impulse), MS Office, strong project coordination & documentation skills.
