About the Role

Karamtara Engineering Ltd is seeking an experienced and strategic Head – Learning & Development to design and drive the organisation-wide learning agenda. Based at the Corporate Office in Worli, Mumbai, the incumbent will be responsible for building capability across corporate functions and manufacturing plant locations – covering leadership development, functional and technical training, behavioural skilling, and organisation-wide culture-building interventions.

The role requires a strong understanding of the manufacturing / heavy engineering sector, adult learning principles, competency and skill-matrix design, and the ability to design and deploy learning interventions that work equally well for corporate teams and shopfloor / plant workforce.

Key Responsibilities

L&D Strategy

  • Design and implement an organisation-wide Learning & Development strategy aligned with business goals, covering corporate office and manufacturing plant requirements.
  • Partner with business and plant leaders to identify capability gaps and build annual training calendars and budgets.
  • Build a long-term leadership pipeline through structured development programmes for high-potential talent.
  • Drive a culture of continuous learning across all levels of the organisation, from shop floor to leadership.

Leadership & Managerial Development

  • Design and roll out leadership development programmes for senior management, middle management, and first-time managers.
  • Build succession-readiness through structured assessment and development frameworks.
  • Partner with external institutes, business schools, and coaches for leadership interventions where required.

Functional & Technical Training

  • Own the design and delivery of functional and technical training programmes across engineering, manufacturing, quality, projects, and supply chain.
  • Work with plant and functional heads to build skill matrices and competency frameworks for critical roles.
  • Drive certification and upskilling programmes for plant-level technical and supervisory staff.

Onboarding, Culture & Engagement

  • Design induction and onboarding journeys for new joiners across corporate and plant locations.
  • Lead culture-building and values-driven interventions in partnership with HR Business Partners.
  • Support change management and organisational development initiatives as needed.

Learning Operations & Technology

  • Drive adoption of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and digital learning platforms across locations.
  • Establish and monitor L&D KPIs, including Training Man-days, Training Effectiveness, Coverage Ratio, and Cost-per-Learner.
  • Institutionalise post-training evaluation and ROI measurement frameworks.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Manage relationships with training vendors, content providers, institutes, and subject-matter experts.
  • Negotiate commercial terms and monitor vendor and programme performance.
  • Present periodic L&D dashboards and MIS to senior leadership.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the L&D team across corporate and plant locations.
  • Build a high-performing L&D function focused on quality, relevance, and business impact.

Desired Candidate Profile

Education

  • MBA / PGDM in Human Resources, or a Master's degree in a relevant discipline, from a reputed institute.
  • Certifications in Learning & Development, Instructional Design, Leadership Coaching, or Organisation Development will be an advantage.

Experience

  • 15 – 18 years of progressive HR experience, with a significant part of this in Learning & Development.
  • Substantial experience in heavy engineering / manufacturing organisations, such as Engineering, Industrial Products, Auto Components, EPC, Metals, or Process Industries.
  • Proven track record of designing and delivering learning interventions across both corporate and manufacturing plant environments.
  • Experience in multi-location L&D delivery, including plant-level technical and behavioural training.
