Aditya Birla Science & Technology Company (ABSTC), the Corporate R&D Centre of Aditya Birla Group, is looking for a passionate and innovation-driven professional in the field of advanced coatings and battery materials.
This role offers an opportunity to work on next-generation coating technologies, conductive materials, and polymeric binders for Li-ion and Na-ion battery applications, while collaborating with leading researchers, production teams, and external research partners.
Role Overview
The incumbent will be responsible for research, formulation development, characterization, and scale-up of advanced coating systems and polymeric binder technologies for energy storage applications. The role involves both laboratory and pilot-scale development activities with a strong focus on innovation, process integration, and technical problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop conductive coatings for aluminum and copper foils used in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries.
- Design and develop advanced binder systems for cathode, anode, and solid-state battery applications.
- Conduct literature surveys and technology benchmarking on advanced coating and dispersion systems.
- Develop water- and solvent-based slurry/coating formulations and optimize rheological and curing properties.
- Lead laboratory and pilot-scale coating trials and collaborate with coating line and production teams for implementation.
- Perform coating characterization and analytical evaluation using advanced techniques such as SEM, TEM, AFM, FTIR, NMR, HPLC, etc.
- Collaborate with internal ABG R&D teams, academic institutes, and external research laboratories.
- Prepare technical reports, research proposals, publications, and patent/IPR documentation.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies through conferences, seminars, customer visits, and industry interactions.
Required Skills & Experience
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in polymer binders, coatings, dispersions, and slurry development on metallic substrates, preferably in battery or energy storage applications.
- Strong understanding of polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, and coating technologies.
- Hands-on experience in coating formulation, rheology studies, curing/crosslinking processes, and coating characterization methods.
- Experience in physical and analytical testing including adhesion, corrosion, abrasion, spectroscopy, microscopy, and chromatography techniques.
- Ability to manage multiple research projects and deliver within timelines.
- Strong awareness of laboratory safety practices and environmental standards.
Preferred Expertise
- Experience in Li-ion/Na-ion battery materials and separator coatings.
- Exposure to roll-to-roll coating technologies such as slot-die, gravure, and offset coating.
- Knowledge of conductive materials such as CNTs, graphene, and carbon black.
- Understanding of ceramic and hybrid coatings for battery separator applications.
- Exposure to industrial R&D environments and technology commercialization.
Educational Qualification
- Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines with 2+ years of relevant experience
- OR
- M.Tech./M.S. in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines with 5+ years of relevant experience
