Role Overview:
The Quality Engineer - Automation is responsible for delivering high quality, automation led testing within Agile DevOps, product centric delivery teams. The role focuses on building, executing, and maintaining robust automated test suites, ensuring quality is embedded throughout the Software Development Lifecycle in line with Bupa Testing Practice, standards, and Quality Gate requirements.
The role works closely with Architects, Developers, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and other Quality Engineers to ensure functional; integration, end to end, regression, and non-functional testing is delivered effectively and consistently.
This is a hands-on automation role, with Playwright as a core skill and exposure to API automation considered a strong advantage.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
Quality Engineering Delivery:
- Act as an independent Quality Engineer within Agile DevOps, product centric delivery teams
- Deliver testing in line with approved Test Strategies and Test Plans, adhering to Bupa Testing Practice and delivery lifecycles (SDLC, ADLC, IDLC)
- Ensure testing activities provide appropriate Quality Gate evidence
- Act as a quality custodian, ensuring defects, risks, and quality concerns are identified and addressed early.
Automation & Shift Left Testing:
- Design, develop, and maintain automated test packs with high efficiency and quality.
- Build and enhance automation frameworks following Bupa standards and best practices
- Execute automated tests as part of CI/CD pipelines.
- Support shift left testing, working closely with developers to improve testability.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of automation standards, tooling, and frameworks
- Leverage low code / no code tools where appropriate to improve coverage and speed.
Test Design & Execution:
- Develop test specifications, test cases, scripts, and traceability matrices aligned to business requirements and user stories
Design test scenarios covering:
- Functional flows
- Integration points
- Negative and edge cases
- Usability considerations
- Maintain regression test packs and ensure they remain current
- Identify, create, and manage test data for manual and automated testing
Execute and evaluate:
- Automated tests
- Manual tests where required
- Analyze test results and produce clear, accurate test reports
Risk, Defect & Quality Management:
- Identify testing and quality risks and propose mitigation strategies
- Log, track, and support resolution of defects using approved Bupa tools (e.g. Azure DevOps)
- Follow Bupa change management and defect management processes
- Produce testing documentation and metrics to support delivery and assurance
- Participate in Post Implementation Reviews and continuous improvement activities
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work hand in hand with developers throughout the development lifecycle to ensure quality is built in.
Participate actively in:
- Requirements and story analysis
- Sprint planning
- Daily stand ups
- Reviews and retrospectives
Review and provide quality input into:
- Business requirements
- Functional specifications
- User stories
- Test strategies, results, and release notes
- Support UAT and implementation phases, including OAT support where required
- Share knowledge, best practices, and learning within the Quality Engineering Community.
Non-Functional Testing (Good to have):
Develop and execute non functional testing in line with Bupa standards, including:
- Performance testing
- Accessibility testing
- Visual testing.

TEST – Functional Testing (Level 3):
- Designs and executes test cases and scripts aligned to defined acceptance criteria
- Applies agreed standards for manual and automated testing
- Automates testing tasks and expands test coverage
- Analyses and reports on test results, issues, and risks
BPTS – Acceptance Testing (Level 3):
- Designs and executes test scenarios against pre-defined acceptance criteria
- Validates functional and non-functional outcomes
RELM – Release and Deployment (Level 3):
- Supports release planning and scheduling
- Participates in release assurance and testing activities
- Follows defined release and deployment processes
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Strong hands-on automation experience (essential)
Proven experience using:
- Playwright (TypeScript / JavaScript) - mandatory
- Experience designing and executing automated tests for web applications
- Exposure to API automation (good to have)
- Experience working within Agile / DevOps delivery models
- Experience with test and defect management tools (e.g. Azure DevOps)
Understanding of:
- Functional, integration, end to end, and regression testing
- Test data management
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and collaboration skills
Good to Have:
- API automation experience (Karate / Postman / similar)
- Experience with Low Code / No Code automation tools
- Exposure to AI assisted testing

Qualifications & Professional Standards;
- ISTQB Foundation or Intermediate (preferred)
- Experience: typically, 2-7 years in Quality Engineering
- Minimum 2 years relevant hands-on automation experience
