Position Title: Platform Engineer.

Role Summary:

The Platform Engineer will be responsible for the successful maintenance and growth of Costco’s Database, Business Intelligence & Integration environments/technologies. This position will ensure Costco’s database reporting and integration platforms have stability, resilience and optimal performance. The Platform Engineer will work with Costco’s Infrastructure and Architecture teams to ensure that best practices are followed in supporting multiple enterprise platforms.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Database Platforms:

• Maintains database security, integrity, and availability.
• Manages database performance and capacity.
• Works with team members to establish routine maintenance; monitoring; alerting; metrics collection/logging to proactively identify database related issues, ensuring the database is highly responsive at all times.
• Reviews performance stats and recommends changes for SQL query tuning/optimization.
• Participate in off hours 24/7 on call support on a rotational basis.

Business Intelligence & Data Integration Platforms:

• Manages the platform on an ongoing basis while performing monitoring, patching and support functions.
• Leads and conducts code reviews, design reviews, testing, and debugging activities at the application level.
• Remediates platform issues and bottlenecks impacting software development activities.
• Implements service and application monitoring across all platforms to ensure continuous availability and operational continuity of critical systems.
• Participates in DevOps, Agile, and continuous integration frameworks, including, but not limited to GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps CI/CD Pipelines.
• Evaluates, understands, and implements patches and environment upgrades.
• Demonstrate strong technical aptitude in cloud architecture, services, and design concepts.
• Works in an Agile environment; collaborates with Operations, Development, and QA functions to develop solutions and systems that are predisposed to scalability, security, and simplified maintenance, utilizing automation whenever possible.
• Follows security management practices, including the ongoing promotion of awareness on current threats, auditing of server logs, and other security management processes.
• Manages/Coordinates virtual and physical servers including server provisioning, upgrading, installing, monitoring, maintaining, and performance optimization.
• Identifies and resolves problems, often anticipating issues before they occur or before they grow; develops and evaluates options, implements solutions, communicates results to ensure corrective and timely action is taken, and manages incident resolution to ensure all components work together.
• Participate in off hours 24/7 on call support on a rotational basis.

Experience Required: 5+ years of experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Database Platforms:

• 5+ years of Data Warehousing experience with at least 2 years being on multiple platforms.
• 5+ years of “hands-on” experience with Google Big Query and/or Azure Synapse.
• Effective use of AI and/or LLMs to increase efficiency in deliverables.
• Strong understanding of Dimensional Modeling.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, Azure DevOps, and GitHub Actions.
• Understanding of networking principles.
• Knowledge of Terraform and/or Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodology.
• Participate in off hours 24/7 on call support on a rotational basis.

Business Intelligence & Data Integration Platforms:

• 5+ years' experience managing production BI & Data Integration environments.
• 5+ years' experience scripting using PowerShell, Bash, JavaScript, Python, or other scripting languages.
• 5+ years' experience with Power BI platform security setup and capacity management.
• 5+ years' experience with DBT platform security setup and capacity management.
• 5+ years' experience in automation using release pipelines.
• 5+ years' experience with version control (GHE preferred) and automation tools such as ADO, Terraform, Ansible, Puppet etc.
• Effective use of AI and/or LLMs to increase efficiency in deliverables.
• Working knowledge of Linux/Unix/AIX Operating Systems, shell scripting, package management systems, and other utilities.
• Experience with SaaS, PaaS, and Cloud solutions.
• Experience with Terraform.
• Experience with complex multi-server tiered environments.
• Experience with configuring and maintaining High Availability environments.
• Experience in effectively implementing a production environment monitoring and support strategy (ping, traceroute, netstat, Dynatrace, Google Cloud Logging, Azure Monitor, Azure Security Center, Log Analytics/Application Insights, Splunk, etc.).
• Knowledge of Databases (MongoDB, Synapse, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Postgresql, Big query).
• Knowledge of associated industry security protocol standards such as: LDAP, DNS, TCP/IP, etc.
• Understanding of Enterprise level services - Active Directory, SAML, IDP (Ping preferred).
• Security experience including SSL certificates, TLS, hardening, PEN tests, etc.
