Job description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Care and Patient Management:

  • Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with kidney diseases, including:
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Glomerulonephritis and other renal inflammatory disorders
  • Hypertension, diabetes, and their kidney-related complications
  • Electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disturbances
  • Supervise and manage patients requiring dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis).
  • Provide pre-transplant and post-transplant care for kidney transplant patients.
  • Conduct outpatient clinics for the management of chronic kidney diseases and related conditions.
  • Manage complex nephrology cases in an inpatient setting (ICU, HDU, and general wards).
  • Perform renal biopsies, and assist with other diagnostic procedures as needed.

2. Dialysis Management:

  • Supervise hemodialysis sessions and ensure proper management of patients requiring dialysis.
  • Monitor patients on peritoneal dialysis, providing guidance and education on catheter insertion and ongoing management.
  • Collaborate with nursing and dialysis staff to optimize dialysis protocols and improve patient outcomes.

3. Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other specialists (e.g., cardiologists, endocrinologists, transplant surgeons, etc.) to provide comprehensive care for patients with kidney-related issues.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions for managing complex nephrology cases.
  • Guide junior doctors, residents, and fellows in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of nephrology patients.

4. Patient Counseling and Education:

  • Counsel patients and their families regarding renal disease, treatment options, lifestyle modifications, and the importance of adherence to medications.
  • Educate patients on the dialysis process, transplantation, and the importance of regular follow-ups.
  • Discuss renal transplant options and provide pre- and post-transplant counseling.

5. Academic and Research Contributions:

  • Engage in clinical research in the field of nephrology and contribute to publishing in national and international journals.
  • Conduct educational sessions, seminars, and workshops for residents, medical students, and staff.
  • Actively participate in academic activities like case presentations, research projects, and institutional review boards (IRBs).

6. Quality and Safety Management:

  • Ensure strict adherence to hospital protocols and best practices for patient safety, particularly in renal care.
  • Participate in clinical audits, outcome reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines and treatment protocols for nephrology patients.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educational Qualification:
  • MBBS + MD (Internal Medicine)
  • DM / DNB in Nephrology or equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Experience:
  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in clinical nephrology, managing both inpatient and outpatient nephrology cases.
  • Hands-on experience in dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), renal biopsies, and kidney transplant management.
  • Experience in handling complex nephrology cases and working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Licensure:
  • Valid medical registration with the State Medical Council or National Medical Council.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Advanced knowledge of nephrology and kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), and dialysis.
  • Proficiency in managing dialysis patients (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and kidney transplant patients.
  • Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction, counseling, and collaboration with colleagues.
  • Strong teaching and mentoring abilities to guide junior staff and medical residents.
  • Ability to handle critical, high-pressure situations, particularly in ICU and emergency care.
  • Familiarity with renal care protocols, dialysis machines, and electronic medical records (EMR).
