Role Overview :
As Automation Engineer 3, you will be responsible for leading the conceptualization, design, engineering, and commissioning of advanced automation systems for large-scale continuous process industries.
This role requires a seasoned professional who can independently solve complex engineering challenges, manage projects, mentor junior engineers, and represent CDM Smith in technical forums and business development initiatives.
You will apply advanced engineering techniques, tools, and methodologies to design, integrate, and optimize automation solutions, ensuring reliability, scalability, and compliance with industry standards and cybersecurity frameworks.
Key Responsibilities :
Engineering & Technical Leadership :
- Lead the design, development, and commissioning of automation systems for continuous process industries, covering PLC, SCADA, DCS, and telemetry systems.
- Select, size, and integrate field sensing devices, wired / wireless networks, industrial control hardware, and communication protocols.
- Design automation system architectures with a strong emphasis on network security, redundancy, and scalability.
- Perform advanced PLC and HMI programming, system integration, and testing using platforms such as Rockwell, GE, Modicon, Siemens, and equivalent technologies.
- Develop Intelligent P&ID diagrams and manage drafting tools to create precise automation documentation.
- Evaluate feasibility of proposed equipment, processes, or testing procedures and recommend innovative solutions.
Project Management :
Plan, coordinate, and direct mid-to-large automation projects or multiple small-scale complex projects.Estimate manpower needs, develop schedules, assign tasks, and ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets.Oversee and review the work of engineering teams (typically 510 engineers), ensuring technical quality and compliance.Conduct project risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.Prepare technical reports, project documentation, and compliance reports for stakeholders.Innovation & Business Development :
Identify opportunities for adopting emerging automation technologies, Industry 4.0 practices, and digital twin applications.Contribute to strategic planning, proposals, and business development activities for new projects and clients.Represent CDM Smith at industry conferences, client meetings, and technical forums.Mentorship & Collaboration :
Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering technical excellence and knowledge transfer.Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and clients to deliver optimized automation solutions.Minimum Qualifications :
Education :
B. / B. in Automation Engineering with 6+ years of relevant experience; OR M. / M. in a related field with 4 to 6 years of relevant experience.Experience :
Minimum of 15,000 engineering man-hours in conceptual design, engineering, construction, and commissioning of automation systems.Technical Skills :
Strong expertise in automation system design and application engineering.Proficiency in PLC programming, HMI / SCADA development, and system integration.Hands-on experience with AE tools (Rockwell, GE, Modicon, etc.Knowledge of network and cybersecurity design for automation systems.Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, applying advanced engineering judgment and problem-solving skills.Demonstrated capability in project planning, execution, and cross-team collaboration.Professional Certifications :
ISA / GICSP / CompTIA Cybersecurity Certification.PLC Programming Certification from an accredited agency.Professional Engineer (PE) License from a recognized body.Exposure to Industry 4.0, IIoT, Digital Twin, AI / ML for automation, and advanced industrial protocols.Experience in cross-border or global project execution(ref : hirist.tech)
