Job description
  • Office locations : all ABS offices
  • APS2 to EL1 : multiple positions available across the Census Program for up to 1.5 years
  • Register of Interest for ongoing APS staff only
  • Registrations of Interest are invited from current ongoing APS staff to either temporarily transfer at level or undertake Higher Duties. These opportunities are only available to ongoing staff.

    The Census Program is seeking to fill several positions across all teams within the Program. The Register of Interest (ROI) has been created for ongoing staff to express their interest in working for the Census and will (initially) be utilised to fill current vacancies available between now and mid 2026.

    In addition to the roles advertised the Register of Interest (ROI) maybe used to back-fill positions that result from this process.

    • You must have approval from your Director before applying
    • multiple roles available across the Census Program
    • all ABS locations considered
    • various classification levels
    • vacancies available between now and mid 2026
    • duration up to 1.5 years
    • open to ongoing staff only for transfer at level or higher duties
    • possibility of permanent transfers at level by negotiation.
    • Important Information

    • The ROI is ongoing with positions being filled as appropriate candidates apply. (i.e. don’t wait until the register is closed to apply).
    • The register will be open for new applications up until 11 : 30pm AEST on Tuesday 30 June 2026.
    • You will only be contacted when / if you are being considered for a role.  The register will remain open to draw from as further vacancies become available.
    • Your details will stay on the register once they are submitted.
    • All Census Directors have access to the register so you may be contacted about a position that you haven’t indicated a preference towards.

    • You must have endorsement from your Director before applying.

      1. A brief statement (no more than 300 words) outlining :

    • whether you are applying for transfer at level or higher duties, or both.
    • what you will bring to the role(s) and how the role(s) will support your development (this should relate to the position(s) you are interested in being considered for and address the relevant selection criteria).
    • 2. An up-to-date resume which includes the names of two referees. One referee should be your current Director. As part of the selection process, we may or may not seek referee reports.

      3. Please ensure that in your application, you select all roles that you wish to be considered for, noting you will need to write an application for each section / team  you are applying for.

      Please ensure you are deliberate in your choices, based on your interest and development / career pathways and that each application you write is target specifically to the role(s) and selection criteria. When applying to multiple classifications within the one section (one written application) please pitch your application at the highest level.
