of the Role
The Head of E&I is a senior technical and leadership role responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and optimization of all Electrical and Instrumentation systems across the company's manufacturing facilities and civil / construction project sites. The primary goal is to ensure highly reliable, safe, and efficient power distribution, process control, and automation.
Key Responsibilities :
I. Engineering Leadership and Design Standards
- Design Oversight : Lead and manage the detailed electrical engineering and design teams for new substations, expansions, and refurbishments, covering single-line diagrams, physical layouts, grounding, lightning protection, and control / protection schemes.
- Technical Governance : Establish, maintain, and enforce technical specifications, engineering standards, and best practices for all substation components (e.g., switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, control panels).
- Technology & Innovation : Evaluate and implement new substation technologies, including Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), advanced protection relays, and Substation Automation Systems (SAS) based on IEC 61850.
- Peer Review : Conduct high-level technical reviews of engineering deliverables, studies (e.g., insulation coordination, load flow, short circuit), and vendor proposals.
II. Manufacturing Plant & Process Control
Maintenance & Reliability : Develop and lead predictive and preventive maintenance strategies for all plant E&I assets, including high / medium / low voltage systems, transformers, switch gear, PLC / DCS systems, sensors, and actuators.Automation & Optimization : Drive continuous improvement initiatives in plant automation, instrumentation, and control logic to enhance production efficiency, quality, and reduce energy consumption.Troubleshooting : Act as the highest level of technical expertise for diagnosing and resolving complex electrical faults, instrumentation failures, and control system malfunctions.Calibration & Standards : Establish and manage the program for the regular calibration of critical process instruments to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality standards.III. Civil / Construction Project Electrical Infrastructure
Temporary Power : Oversee the design, installation, and compliance of temporary electrical power distribution systems across large construction sites (e.g., generator synchronization, site lighting, power panels).Commissioning Support : Provide technical leadership during the installation and pre-commissioning / commissioning phases of new construction projects, ensuring E&I systems meet design specifications and performance criteria.Bidding & Estimation : Support the commercial team by reviewing E&I scopes of work, providing accurate cost estimates, and selecting qualified vendors / subcontractors for project-specific E&I packages.III. Safety, Compliance, and Budget Management
Safety & Regulatory Compliance : Ensure all E&I installations, maintenance procedures, and equipment operate in strict adherence to national and international electrical codes, safety standards (e.g., lock-out / tag-out), and environmental regulations.Budget & Spares : Manage the E&I department's annual OPEX budget (maintenance, spares, consumables) and contribute to CAPEX planning for equipment upgrades, new technology adoption, and infrastructure expansion.Documentation : Maintain accurate and up-to-date electrical single-line diagrams, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), control narratives, and compliance records.IV. Leadership and Vendor Management
Team Leadership : Recruit, train, and manage E&I engineers, supervisors, and technicians, enhancing their technical skills in emerging technologies and safety practices.Vendor Management : Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with E&I suppliers, contractors, and specialized service providers, ensuring high-quality service and competitive pricing.Required Qualifications and Skills
Education : Bachelors degree in Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering is mandatory.Experience : Minimum 18-20 years of progressive experience in E&I, with significant experience in both a continuous process Manufacturing environment and large-scale Civil / Construction projects. At least 5 years in a senior leadership role.Technical Expertise : In-depth knowledge of Power Systems (HT / LT), PLCs / DCS (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell, ABB), VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), industrial sensors, and telemetry systems.Certifications : Relevant professional licensing or certifications in Electrical Safety / Codes (e.g., Electrical Inspectorate clearances).Competencies : Strong analytical skills, excellent trouble-shooting abilities, proactive safety orientation, and effective team management.(ref : iimjobs.com)
