About Condé Nast’s Business and Legal Affairs team (BALA)
The BALA team is led by the General Counsel based in our New York HQ and is comprised of colleagues in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Purpose
The purpose of this role is to head up the legal department of Conde Nast India, which includes the Indian market business and shared service centres.
The role holder will report to the VP International but work closely with the India MD and Director of Finance. The role holder will be the first point of contact for legal matters arising in India and agree escalation channels and delegation processes as necessary with the wider BALA team and relevant functions in India e.g. Finance and HR teams.
The role holder will also support BALA with the implementation of any multi market legal matters or transactions on which they are working e.g. the roll out of global ethical policies which need to be considered through Indian law. The role holder will have a duty to make sure that global policies and initiatives are informed by Indian law and its regulatory environment.
What will you be doing :
- Lead and manage the India legal team, including mentoring and supervising team members, while aligning legal strategies with organisational goals;
- Provide pragmatic, commercial and strategic legal advice to the India leadership team;
- Advise and support on all other legal matters arising in Condé Nast India, including but not limited to intellectual property, litigation, commercial contracts, data privacy, employment, corporate governance and regulatory matters.
- Anticipate and respond to new legislation, with the ability to digest, summarise and communicate how new legal and regulatory developments will affect the business;
- Evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and impacts of strategic and commercial decisions and the legal implications that arise;
- Manage external legal resource to ensure comprehensive and cost-efficient legal support to all areas of the business;
- Proactive management of legal costs and the ongoing identification of opportunities for savings;
- Build rapport with, and function as a trusted advisor to, key stakeholders including global stakeholders and the India leadership team;
- Maintain strong relationships with senior leaders in key departments (such as HR / Finance / Editorial) and the wider leadership team;
- Ensure that global Condé Nast initiatives are informed by local law and implemented in a compliant manner; and
- Clear and effective reporting of legal matters from the India market teams to the Condé Nast HQ leadership team.
Skills, Experience and Requirements :
Significant legal experience gained in an house environment at a senior level having at least 10 years post-qualification experience;Experience in leading and delivering legal change strategy independently;Expertise in corporate law and India regulatory compliance required;Expertise in employment and intellectual property preferable;Experience of delivering legal services in a major multinational corporation;Experience of working with global compliance programmes; andExperience of legal team management, budgeting and reporting.Demonstrated leadership and project management skills, including a track record of taking ownership of projects and seeing them through to completion with enthusiasm and determination.Fluent English speaker.
