About the engagement
Our edge Box is the campus time authority. We need a specialist to design and validate precise clock discipline across cameras, mics, and sensors using PTP (IEEE-1588) , with NTP / chrony fallbacks, so cross-modal CEP remains trustworthy.
Time : 3–6 hrs / week during design / commissioning; ad-hoc thereafter. Location : Remote.
Works with : Edge Perf / Sync engineer, Rohit (platform), DSP consultant (for Δt budgets).
What you’ll do
- Design campus timing architecture : grandmaster selection (GNSS vs Box), boundary / transparent clocks, VLAN / QoS.
- Deploy and tune linuxptp (ptp4l, phc2sys, pmc) and chrony; document NIC / switch configs (Cisco / Arista / Juniper or equivalent).
- Establish acceptance tests : skew / jitter targets, wander, step response; create Grafana dashboards for drift and holdover.
- Write commissioning SOPs : firmware, servo parameters, delay mechanisms (E2E vs P2P), announce intervals, clock classes.
- Define failure modes & fallbacks : holdover behavior, NTP degrade, alarms when skew >
thresholds.
Must-have
7+ years with PTP in production (broadcast / industrial / finance / AVB / gPTP).Hands-on with boundary / transparent clock switches, NIC PHC, and Linux timing stack.Measurement discipline : how to prove sub-millisecond sync on LAN; tooling & methods.Nice-to-have
Multi-site timing over WAN; GNSS grandmaster design and antenna siting.Experience aligning timing for audio arrays and camera fleets simultaneously.Security hardening for PTP / NTP (ACLs, VLANs, management plane).Deliverables (first 3–5 weeks)
