The Senior Underwriter is responsible for independently analyzing, evaluating, and approving complex credit requests in accordance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and sound underwriting principles. This role requires a deep understanding of financial statements, risk assessment, and loan structuring across various lending products. The Senior Underwriter serves as a subject matter expert and mentor to junior underwriters, ensuring the overall quality and consistency of credit decisions.
Responsibilities
- Credit Evaluation : Analyze financial statements, tax returns, and cash flow projections to assess borrower creditworthiness and repayment ability.
- Risk Assessment : Identify key risks and prepare comprehensive credit memorandums outlining strengths, weaknesses, and mitigants.
- Policy Compliance : Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal credit policies, underwriting standards, and regulatory guidelines (e.g., OCC, FDIC, SBA, or FNMA, depending on institution).
- Collaboration : Partner with Relationship Managers, Loan Closers, and Credit Administration to ensure timely and accurate processing of credit requests.
- Portfolio Monitoring : Support ongoing risk management by reviewing existing exposures and identifying early warning indicators.
- Training & Mentoring : Guide and review work of junior underwriters, providing coaching and feedback to enhance team performance.
- Process Improvement : Contribute to the refinement of underwriting workflows, documentation standards, and risk models.
Required :
Education : Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (MBA or equivalent preferred).Experience : Minimum 5–8 years of experience in commercial, small business, or consumer underwriting (depending on product focus).Technical Skills :Strong analytical and quantitative abilities.Proficiency in financial spreading and risk rating tools (e.g., Moody’s Risk Analyst, Sageworks, etc.).Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills.Knowledge : Deep understanding of loan documentation, collateral valuation, regulatory compliance, and credit policy interpretation.Soft Skills : Excellent judgment, attention to detail, communication, and negotiation skills. Proven ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.Preferred :
Experience underwriting SBA 7(a) and 504 loans (for SBA-focused roles).Prior exposure to commercial real estate, C&I, or asset-based lending.Company background :
