Role Overview

Kagool is seeking a Senior Power BI Consultant to lead the Power BI workstream on a complex SAP company code segmentation project for a key US customer.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The consultant will :

  • Lead a team of 2–3 Power BI engineers
  • Own the end-to-end Power BI impact assessment and remediation for SAP company code and related SAP object changes
  • Quickly get up to speed on the current analysis, scripts, and design already in place
  • Act as the senior technical expert for Power BI debugging and troubleshooting

Key Responsibilities

1. Project and Technical Leadership

  • Own the Power BI workstream for the company code segmentation project.
  • Work closely with the Project Lead, Azure Engineering Lead and consult with the SAP / BW Lead.
  • Lead, coach and coordinate 2–3 Power BI engineers, including work allocation and review of deliverables.
  • Translate SAP and business design decisions into a clear remediation plan for Power BI models, reports and dataflows.
  • Maintain and refine the overall approach to segregating the new company code within Power BI.

    • 2. Environment and Impact Analysis

  • Use Power BI Admin APIs and existing PowerShell scripts to scan the tenant (workspaces, reports, datasets, tables, columns, measures, Power Queries, datasources, users).
  • Understand and enhance existing scanner exports and Excel-based trackers that categorize Power BI assets by company or segment.
  • Lead the identification of objects impacted by the new company code and related SAP changes (e.g. filters, joins, mappings, hard-coded values).
  • Own and refine the Excel-based impact tracker and ensure it remains accurate, complete and up to date.

    • 3. Design and Remediation Planning

  • Work with SAP, Azure and business stakeholders to understand how old and new company codes flow from SAP via BW / Azure into Power BI.
  • Define standard patterns and guidelines for modifying datasets, models, queries and reports.
  • Decide and document when changes should be made by IT versus business users (especially for non-SAP sources such as Excel and file shares).
  • Create and maintain simple decision flows that show what needs to change, who should change it and how to prioritize the changes.

    • 4. Hands-on Power BI Engineering and Troubleshooting

  • Review and, where necessary, refactor Power BI datasets, including data model design and relationships.
  • Debug and fix Power Query (M) and DAX, including issues such as mismatching values before and after segmentation.
  • Resolve common Power BI issues, including refresh failures and performance problems.
  • Ensure updated models correctly handle new company code mappings, filters and any security logic (e.g. row-level security).

    • 5. Stakeholder Management and Communication

  • Act as the primary Power BI point of contact for the project.
  • Run working sessions with report owners, analysts and business users to explain the impact of SAP company code changes and what they need to change in their own reports and data sources.
  • Prepare clear, non-technical summaries for leadership showing scale of impact, key risks and progress against the remediation plan.
  • Support cutover and go-live activities from a Power BI perspective, including testing, validation and hypercare.

    • Required Skills and Experience

    Technical

    6–8+ years of experience working with Power BI in complex enterprise environments.

    Advanced expertise in :

  • Power Query (M), including debugging and restructuring complex, multi-source queries.
  • DAX, including reading, writing and troubleshooting complex measures and optimizing performance.
  • Data modelling, including star schemas, fact and dimension design and model optimization.
  • Strong experience with Power BI Service and Power BI capacities (workspaces, dataflows, gateways, deployment patterns).
  • Experience using Power BI Admin APIs and PowerShell to inventory and scan tenant objects (workspaces, reports, datasets, tables, columns, measures, queries, datasources, users).
  • Good understanding of SAP → Azure → Power BI data flows, ideally including finance concepts such as PCA, COPA and CCA.

    • Leadership and Delivery

  • Proven experience leading small technical BI teams on data or analytics projects.
  • Strong ability to take over an in-progress project, absorb existing designs and analysis and drive it forward.
  • Comfortable working with cross-functional stakeholders across IT, SAP, data engineering, finance, operations and business user groups.
  • Track record of delivering structured analysis, clear remediation plans and high-quality technical outcomes under time pressure.

    • Soft Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to explain complex technical topics in simple, business-friendly language.
  • Highly organised and detail-oriented, comfortable managing large numbers of objects and dependencies.
  • Proactive, self-driven and able to work independently while leading and supporting others.

    • Nice to Have

  • Experience with Tabular Editor or similar tabular model management tools.
  • Experience in energy, utilities, manufacturing or other asset-heavy industries.
  • Familiarity with the Azure data stack (e.g. Azure SQL, Synapse, Databricks).
  • Prior experience with segregation, carve-out or reorganisation projects involving company codes or similar master data changes.

    • What Success Looks Like (First 1–2 Months)

  • The consultant has a solid understanding of the company code segmentation design and the current Power BI landscape.
  • There is a clear, actively maintained inventory of impacted objects and users, with remediation status tracked.
  • The 2–3 Power BI engineers are working effectively under a coherent plan with consistent technical patterns.
  • Key reporting for both the new and existing company codes is functioning correctly and reliably after the SAP changes, with minimal disruption to business users.
